This is on idle, no joke.

I'm keeping a cooling pad under the machine too, still stays the same. Disabled SLI mode as well.

Perhaps you should open it up and use compressed air to clean out the vents, fans, etc. Also, make sure the fans are actually working...

    I wouldnt exactly trust speedfan

Use coretemp, rivatuner and HWmonitor to read system temperatures.

You may need to use an air compressor to blow out the vents in your laptop. Dust buildup will decrease cooling performance.
You should also amke sure to use your laptop only on hard surfaces such as a desk. If you use it on your bed, the quilt/fabric will block all of the vents and trap heat under your laptop, preventing the fans from working properly.

You should also check out the undervolting thread. You should be able to knock off a few degrees off your processor load temperatures

Ventilation on is perfect. I can feel air coming from all the vents.

    Though, I still don't understand -.-

HWMonitor also shows 73c. I'm more worried about my gpu as compared to my cpu though.

I presume your unit is a new one, (As I saw your thread you chosen an M1730) and I rule out dust and anything else. It could be another one of those slightly cookoo cards you got there. Some people have got similar problems in the owner's lounge as well, and they got theirs replaced by calling Dell asking for a replacement card. Check it out.

Where did you place your M1730? I hope it's not on bed cos' that will block air in take.

Have you tried gaming on it? AFAIK, my 8800s idles around the 49-52*C (With powermizers disabled) and reaches 68*C on gaming Crysis at max settings for 3 hours.

Oh and, please do not use Speedfan.

EDIT: Oh yeah you placed it on a cooler. What drivers are you also using?

8700M GT 186.81 drivers. Though, I don't think I can send it back to Dell at this point. It's off warranty.

Still have to buy my 8800s along with replacing the processor.

For future reference, what's the average temperature of a sli gpu?

That will highly depend on the cooling capabilities of the notebook. Generally they're supposed to run cool and nice and able to accommodate dual GPUs. In most designs, the fan will site directly on top of the alum/copper spreader, together with the heatpipe between them. The M1730 and M17x posses this quality.

For SLI GPUs like the M1730 it should be around the temperatures I've mentioned. But general average temperatures I've tested on most units tend to hit highest of 75-80*C approximate to the idling temperatures of 45 - 55*C. Those are -generally- quite expected temperatures for an SLI unit. And for most notebooks.

Your M1730 is capable of handling an X9000 or any older generation Extreme processors, when you OC them to 3.2 or 3.4GHz in the BIOS settings the fans will run up in full blast, cooling not only the CPU but both the SLI GPUs as well. Expect at least 10 - 15*C cooler + MX2/ICD7 applied to the cores.

How is your 8700M GT going on?
