So, my buddies M570RU was overheating (ambient temps around 35c) and he was asking around for what he could do about it. When he asked me i told him the obvious big one, CLEAN IT. Well, i was sitting there when he opened it up and it was completely clean inside, hmmmm. So I told him if he wanted I could apply some AS5 on his CPU and GPU. So, i pulled his 9800m GTS out and cleaned up the heat spreader with arctic clean 1 and 2 and then applied the AS5. Did the same thing with the CPU. Afterwards, i put it all back together with no issues and tried to turn it on. The blue power light turns on and the power and battery lights turn on. The HDD light flashes for a second and then nothing. It stays just like that until you turn it off. Screen doesn't even flicker or anything.

I feel pretty bad because i was like, "yea i'll fix it for you," and now it won't even turn on...Can someone help me figure this situation out?

    Thanks

Someone once told me not to use AS5 on GPUs, a ceramic paste is better for that.

Somehow I don't think it's the paste that's causing your problem though.

Can you try to reseat the ram?
Are you sure you didn't put some paste somewhere that it shouldn't be by accident?

Edit: does your backlight turn on?

    definitely try to re-seat / re-secure everything.

you can start by removing all non-essential hardware for POSTing:
    - battery (run off of AC)
    - HDD
    - Optical Drive
    - Wifi card
    - TV Tuner card
    - Turbo Memory

Did you two remove the battery from the machine before you opened it up?

@Moral Hazard No the backlight is not turning on..only the blue power button light and the green power and and battery lights.

@Gophn Will try all that at lunch and give an update after that.

@Soviet He left the battery in when he originally opened it up and then when i came over to take the GPU out, i removed the battery.

    More to Follow after lunch

    OK UPDATE:

Re-seated the GPU; everything works fine. Easy fix.

I'm glad to hear it's working now, would have been pretty awkward if the thing had died.

AS5 suffers from electrical capacitance and if it bridges some of the tiny metal contacts on gpus/cpus can cause damage.

There are better thermal compounds out there, for example Artic Cooling mx2, which does not have this disadvantage and performs better.

    According to this website: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...k=view&id=150&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=12

    AS5 performed 0.65C better than MX-2.
