So we all know MSI screwed the pooch on their "upgradeability" claim. What I noticed in comparing the GT80 Titan and GT83VR motherboards is that they're essentially the same form factor, including the mounting points. It seems the only limitation is power draw and power management for the older board.
So I was wondering if anyone has attempted to upgrade to the 1080 mxm cards yet, and if so how'd it work out?

The formfactor for the GT83VR which has two 1080s in it is exactly the same as the GT80's formfactor when it comes to the motherboard spacing. The only difference I see is an increase in circuitry to handle a higher power input. I was curious if anyone had actually tried yet.

is there space for one of these?

I believe so.

The problem isn't the form factor of the card but the power requirements.

I'm looking at buying one of these to attempt an upgrade. https://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-MS16L1...233515?hash=item1c8576b4ab:g:HZUAAOSwK6RZGfg9

Of course the Bios will have to be corrected to accept the new video card.

Anybody have any insights here?

I believe it might be possible to upgrade to either 1060 or 1070 but not 1080. The one you've linked has chip itself at different position than standard mxm 3.0 cards. You would need custom heatsink for your titan.

While I've not done the work myself, I've watched a few specialists do customizations like this. The slight offset shouldn't affect cooling with a copper shim and thermal compound. Now if it was a few centimeters, sure you'd have a point, but the offset here isn't a big deal.
