Does anybody know if MSI GX740 laptop will work with 8GB DDR3 SO-DIMMs? The laptop has HM55 chipset, mine also has an i7-820QM CPU in it. I know, that the integrated memory controller in Clarksfield i7s supports up to 16GB ram, but MSI product page for GX740 states, that the laptop supports up to 8GB RAM. I wonder if anybody has already tried to upgrade a GX740 (or any other 1st gen. Core i7 MSI laptop) to 16GB RAM with two 8GB sticks.

EDIT: after reading some Intel documentation I found out, that the maximum memory available for Clarksfield CPUs is actually 8GB. :(

Nevertheless, I am wondering if anyone has ever tried to put 16GB of RAM into a laptop with a 1st gen. i7.

    It almost always works.

The hp 8740w supported 4 RAM slots so I don't know why it wouldn't support 16gb RAM.

Just FYI, the MSI GX740 with 1st gen. i7 proprely detects 8GB SO-DIMMs in both BIOS and Windows. Mine is running with 16GB of RAM now (2x8GB).

Alot of HM/PM55 chipsets support 8 GB DIMMS, just not officially as Intel published the spec sheet before 8 GB DIMMs came to the consumer market. My Alienware with a PM55 says 0 MB chips in each DIMM, but Windows shows 16 GB just fine.
