MSI screen replacement after market

I want a 4k screen, but I do not want to wait.

Has anyone had any experience with MSI in terms of upgrading screens after market?

It wouldn't surprise me if they offer a refresh of this model come CES2015, but I need a new laptop ASAP.

I'd be more than happy to return my machine after once they did a refresh and pay for the difference to have the factory fit the new screen.

It would be easier to simply sell your current machine and buy the one you actually want when it is available.


If the hardware/platform is the same except for the screen:

Buy your own, additional storage device (SSD, of course), remove the stock HDD (I would only choose the most basic model when configuring it) as soon as you receive your system and use the upgraded SSD to install your O/S, Drivers, Programs and Data.

When the model with the screen you want is released; simply buy the new and sell the old with the original HDD - put in your SSD and you should be hitting the ground running.


Of course, this may cost you more than the difference between the two models - but so will simply 'upgrading' the screen (which I'd guess MSI wouldn't do so willingly either though).


Alternately (my advice); instead of buying the model now available - simply buy any other system (cheap) that will do the work you require, knowing you'll be selling it soon.


Either way, it will cost you more than simply buying when the model and with the spec's you want is available. No way around this.

With the requirement of needing a new system now but also wanting the future features/specs - the only way to achieve this is with more $$$$ being spent by you.

I agree with Tiller. Buy the laptop you need now. And if you want a different laptop a year from now, sell what you have and buy the new laptop you want.

Upgrading screens is not a simple or straightforward process. MSI will not do it for you. You pretty much need to do t yourself... Which also means you accept the risk of the labor, potential damage to the parts (especially the delicate ribbon cables), and voiding your warranty.

On top of that, it will not be easy to buy a 4k panel for your laptop. The only real source to buy laptop display panels are from people that salvaged the working panels from dead laptops. And for a new technology like a 4k laptop panel, finding a salvaged part will be difficult and expensive. I can almost guarantee that it will be easier and cheaper to buy a laptop now, sell it in 1 year, and buy another laptop in 2015.
