    Hello,

Have a 9600m gt to replace my 9300m, however the original screws from the 9300m card wont fit through the mounting holes in the new card. Smaller screws that do fit through wont grip the thread on the heatsink.

I have tried prying the mounting bracket off with no luck, scared I'll put too much force on the card.

I know its probably not a good idea but what are peoples thoughts if I drilled out the holes in the mounting bracket to enable the old screws to fit?
I would wrap the card in kapton tape first to stop any metal bits causing damage to the card.
Anyone have any good ideas other than drilling?

Marked with yellow arrow is the mounting bracket, red circles are what I plan to drill out

    Thanks

Very brave, but cool. Have you thought about hand drill? The one that comes with handle like a screw driver. This would give you better control.

Be careful and think carefully before going through with this project.

    cheers ...

drilling, that is a bad idea
Get a tap and thread it in.
Your probably looking for a 6-24, 6-32 or 8-32 thread for replacement

Any decent machinist can tell you the thread pitch of the mounting holes in the heatsink and the screws.

Do not drill them. The tap sell drill and cut threads.

It is easier to get the right screws for the application. Again, any decent machinist will have drawers filled of each width and thread type for screws. All you need to do is get the right length, which a dremel/cut off can do.

Thanks for the replies, never thought of a tapping it actually, however I dont need thread on the card holes.
If I tap them though that would probably be a safer bet than a drill ;)

Off to find a machinist I go...
