Ok a buddy of mine has an XPS gen 1 3.4EE 9800 60gb 7200rpm hd 1gb of mem... anyways, the thermal throttling is coming on so now when he games he gets litteraly like 10 FPS, this is completely unplayabe. We have cleaned out the laptop by blowing w/ compressed air, but no luck. He doesnt have the *enter word of choice here* to take it apart so whats the best way to get all the junk outta there and get this thing nice and cool, his prescott is running at like 70Cidle

Is he using a notebook cooler. Those P4's get hot! That would be my first recommendation.

Yeah, he's going to HAVE to take it apart, clean it, apply new thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Ceramique), and try it from there.

No question, especially if he hasn't "opened" it before, turn it off and flip it over. remove the screws holding the fan units in at the back corners and pull the felt off the heat sinks. That should help right away.
