Ok a buddy of mine has an XPS gen 1 3.4EE 9800 60gb 7200rpm hd 1gb of mem... anyways, the thermal throttling is coming on so now when he games he gets litteraly like 10 FPS, this is completely unplayabe. We have cleaned out the laptop by blowing w/ compressed air, but no luck. He doesnt have the *enter word of choice here* to take it apart so whats the best way to get all the junk outta there and get this thing nice and cool, his prescott is running at like 70Cidle

Isn't really a special way to blow the stuff out of there except to just do it... Also check out this thread on cooling your notebook:

All you need to know is in that thread. Hope it helps!!! -
Is he using a notebook cooler. Those P4's get hot! That would be my first recommendation.
-
well that helps but he doesnt use his laptop for going anywhere, and he doesnt want to take it apart. So i guess im stuck w/ trying to blow it out and a chillmat?
-
no notebook cooler, the thermal throttling is on and its at 75C right now... at like 1.66GHz
-
Yeah, he's going to HAVE to take it apart, clean it, apply new thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Ceramique), and try it from there.
-
No question, especially if he hasn't "opened" it before, turn it off and flip it over. remove the screws holding the fan units in at the back corners and pull the felt off the heat sinks. That should help right away.
-
hmm ill look into that... that doesnt seem hard, is it that risky? if this was my laptop i woulda had as5 on it years ago! but he isnt me and he doesnt no anything. So that seems like an easy thing to do...
-
alright he didnt see any felt on the heatsinks but PLENTY OF DUST on the fans! so he cleaned that out and took of the mem cover and cleaned out all that he felt safe taking off... lets see results are!!! *drumroll* well we got an error right off the bat, wtf is this well i have no idea since im not there, but we kept going and booting up like normal and temp results are: before idle 68C thermal throttled at around 1.6 75C load, and now its at like no throttle and around 68C idle and im not sure load yet lets see css fps before 10FPS! WOOT! lol now its around 48FPS!!
-
alright after an hour of css, it starts to lagg again. so im going to build him a chillpad just because im gunna put in some strong fans cuz al the chillmats suck...
