    Hey guys,

I got the Dell XPS 1645 with the Blu-ray Burner (in Europe). Does anybody know if this drive can be kept region free via some firmware update or so? I'm looking for a permanent fix and not the 5 changes that are permitted standard.

    Thanks guys,

Depends on the drive. AnyDVD HD can allow you to watch any region BD, but if the drive has the region hard-coded for BD it may not work.

They offer a free-trial, you could always see if it works for you.

Not all drives support this at a hardware level. If you watch a lot of foreign DVDs, I suggest you either get a region free DVD player or rip them to disk.

VLC media player seems to get around this, in my experience at least.

Except VLC doesn't play blu-ray? If all he wants in multi-region DVD, I agree. I don't think it's clear what the OP wants, multi-region DVD or BD, or both.

Nope, VLC does not play Blu-ray. AFAIK, VLC will need to cough up mad dough if it did play Blue-ray since the format is proprietary.

Multi-region Blu-Ray of course, I want to be able to watch the Region A discs in the burner built in the XPS 1645 which I bought in Europe.

Perhaps a faster approach would be to hit websites like cdfreak and see what players have region-free firmware available.
