Sorry if this is on the wrong thread.

A week ago, my HP dv4t's touch pad started to not work right. Right now it's completely unusable as moving my finger around on the touch pad will either have no response, click or move the pointer an inch on the monitor. I'm not sure if the touch pad board is fried.

My question is: Is it worth it to replace the touch pad or should I just keep an external mouse with me?

I normally use a mouse with my laptop (read:big fingers).

It takes a bit of work to narrow down precisely what make and model of touchpad isn't working in your laptop, and it usually takes removing the top surface of the laptop to replace.

Not impossible if you must have a touchpad.

Did you maybe disable the touchpad by pressing the button?

See if the touchpad works in a Linux environment, that will rule out Windows drivers.

Worst comes to worst the touchpad is defective and needs to be replaced.

Reinstall latest drivers or use microsoft drivers,,check your owners manual, use the Fn key with F3,F6,F8 and see if this toggles touchpad on and off. I had a similar issue once, used the Fn key and got it back working no problems,
    Cheers
