Hi,
I used to have a Thinkpad X220 running Linux. One day I tried to record the sound that was coming out of the laptop speakers using the laptop mic. It appeared that this was impossible and the laptop had something that managed to filter out the laptop speaker output from the mic input. I was wondering if anyone knows a) if there is a special name for this and b) whether this is likely hardware or software (as I hadn't consciously done anything to achieve this).
Thanks, Jamie

In windows you can usually do what you're trying to by recording the Stereo Mix input, I have no idea if you can do that in linux or not.
Alternatively, you connect a short cable between the line out and mic in ports. -

Are you sure sound was being "filtered" or was the mic simply not able to pick it up? You could buy a small pair of portable audio speakers - USB or Line-in - and record off those.
I'm not sure of the audio driver for Linux for your sound chip to really determine if it requires any particular configuration. -

Definitely go with one of the previously mentioned methods. Hardware with dual 3.5mm cable or software with a system sound capture program or setting. The quality will be insurmountaby better
