I turned my laptop on yesterday, and my Mata****a dvd-Ram UJ-850S ATA device didn't show up. I went into device manager and it shows up but says the drive is missing or corrupt. I did a system restore and it was back to working fine, except every time i know turn it off it goes back to not showing up so have to do system restore everytime i turn it on. Tried uninstalling and installing, no good. Tried searching for driver online but just says it is the latest. Any suggestions, If i can help it i'd like to only do fresh install if last resort.

it is more than likely a driver issue with windows, and it is not really the matsu****a drive that is at fault.
Delete your "UpperFilters" and "Lowerfilters" values in the registry the next time you get this problem and reboot, see if it fixes.

i noticed that article applies to xp, i'm using vista home premium. Would i still try that?

Lol, they really should try to fix that filter, to exclude mastsu****a.

i don't have In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters the upperfilters so what can i do.
should i just try delete lower filters seen as i have no upperfilter to delete? -
Microsoft seems to have removed the KB article pertaining to Vista that would fix this issue.
I would also consider looking at what software you have installed. I know some emulation software can cause this, as can other software that uses the drive (DVD writing, etc). -

tried uninstalling software and nothing, any other suggestions or just go back to store and try get a new laptop as it is only 3 months old.
-
I don't know if you live in the U.S. or not. But if you do, you can't just take it back to the store after 3 months. LOL

i live in Australia and if the dvd drive isn't working i should be able to take it back under warranty which lasts for 12 months.

Sorry about that then.

My first action with these types of problems is to uninstall the IDE channel to which the ODD is connected (the channel with transfer model UDMA 2) and then let Windows redetect the hardware.
Some software can cause problems and maybe there are Windows bugs. If my memory is correct, there is a long thread about a similar problem in the Zepto forum. It had a satisfactory outcome. Go and have a browse.
