Which one do I want for my Sager NP8150? I'll be playing games on it, editing footage and pictures, doing my homework, and occasionally watching movies.

The matte screen is $45 more than glossy, by the way. Both are 95% Color Gamut

If you're keeping it inside and aren't bothered by reflections on the screen, stick with gloss. Glossy screens tend to look a bit better/brighter. I'd personally choose Glossy and save the money.

If you're going to be using it in bright places and outside your house a lot, go for matte.

Matte screens always prevail! Just take your notebook outside, you won't be able to see anything..

I don't think I'd take it out much...the environment on the train / on campus might be bright, though. I dunno....

Does the matte screen still display pictures and movies nicely?

Basically, it's not really outdoors where the matte shines, it's just everyday practicality. In fact, tbh, if you're under sunlight, you won't be able to see anything on the matte screen either.

But stuff like... regular room lighting, if your back is facing a poorly tinted window, if you're slightly off angle, etc, matte just gives you much more leeway.

I'm gonna stick to the glossy 95% gamut screen. According to another topic, the matte version has a lot of problems with saturation and whatnot, whereas the glossy is crisp and vibrant.

    Matte.

Glossy screens reflect too much glare/light making them near useless outdoors. Any sunlight and forget it.

They'll look fine, its just some matte LCD's give whatever you're looking at on screen either a subtle sparkle effect, or grainy.

The only time I've been annoyed by glare is when I was at the airport yesterday afternoon.

You could always go into a retail store and see if any have matte screens on display, desktop monitors still come in matte and glossy so you could compare with them.

The only good thing about a glossy screen is that when you are checking your bank account online, you can see from the screen reflection if someone is peeping from behind you.

The wording of "matte" and "glossy" is applying terminology for paint finishes to computer screens, which is part of the confusion and why people think "glossy" is somehow better (and it might be for some things, but not generally).

Of course, if they referrred to the glossy screen as "without anti-glare coating" and the matte screen as "with anti-glare coating", people might realize whats going on.

That said, it's personal preference and how you plan on using it. If you sit in front of the computer in a dark room all the time, a glossy screen might be just the thing. If you plan on using it in well-lit rooms or toting it around, an anti-glare "matte" screen is usually the way to go.

Just fine? Or nice? Does the matte used in the 8150's have the sparkle/grainy effect?

    Basically.

Notebooks come with glossy screens because they look better on a display shelf. See Jerry Jackson's post here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/notebook-news-reviews/603844-lenovo-b470-review-discussion.html

Matte screens should be the standard, they are superior in terms of usability. No reflections, easier to clean, more durable, etc. Glossy = display shelf bait.

IMO an effective antireflective coating on good glossy screens is much better than matte. Then again, the range of quality in glossy (and even matte) screens vary a lot.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh at people who post in these types of threads and flat out tell people one is superior to the other plain and simple. It comes down to personal preference. Some may work better in one situation or another but it all boils down to what you like, want and what your needs are. My personal preference is for a glossy screen. Yes, glossy screens have more issue with glare than matte screens do but in my situation I can mitigate that problem. Personally, I think glossy screens provide a nicer, sharper picture than matte screens do. But again, that's personal opinion.

Higher color gamut (95%) from the looks of it

Yes glossy is sharper because it has a smoother coating. Matte screens have an anti-glare coating which diffuses light to reduce reflections.

But even in an office environment with florescent lighting, i still find it very annoying to use a glossy screen. Glossy only works best when its the only light source in the room.

    Bring back Matte 16:10 panels!

As stated above, there is a wide range of quality between matte and glossy and it is also mostly personal opinion. I've used my glossy Acer in very bright light situations (studying for 2 years under the Caribbean sun) and preferred that over my roommates matte screen on his Lenovo T400 (crap panel too).

I dunno, I don't have any problem using my glossy screen in a brightly lit room with the screen brightness all the way down. I find using my girlfriend's matte screen laptop in the same room is a PITA even with brightness turned up.

I don't mind glossy screens as long as they aren't covered in edge-to-edge glass.

Some matte screens make it seem like you're looking through a screen door....

That's not the matte coating, that's the LCD.
