    I purchased 4GB (2x2GB 800MHz PC6400) for my Gateway ML6227b notebook after checking with crucial.com (it comes with 1GB - 2x512MB)

However, when I installed all 4GB the laptop would not start.

It's fine with 2.5GB as long as i put 2GB in the slot nearest the base of the laptop and 512mb in the slot nearest the keyboard - it won't start if I reverse them (although according to Gateway's website there is no slot1/slot 2 designation - I can put any memory in any slot).

Alternatively it's fine with a single 2GB module in either slot.

I've tried both modules individually and they're fine, but it won't start if i install both.

Are Crucial wrong about the laptops max memory capacity?
(I've since checked with Gateway who claim 2GB is the max)

Has anybody else tried adding more than 2GB to a Gateway ML6227b?

    thanks

Try updating the BIOS? What is your chipset?

    It's an Intel 945GM express

I have the current drivers from Gateway's website. Last time I had problems with the laptop I tried downloading drivers form Intel's website but it told me my PC has custom drivers from the manufacturer and it wouldn't install theirs. Is this possibly the cause of my problem?
If I'm installing new BIOS should I backup first?

    Gateway's website says 2GB: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Oasis/1014496R/1014496Rsp2.shtml
Unfortunately I couldn't find this info on their website until I tried their online help (who gave me this link and closed the conversation rather abruptly!) AFTER I'd bought 4GB!
Looks like I've wasted my money on the 2nd 2GB module. Although it's running quite happily with 2.5GBright now!

PS - I can't find BIOS on Gateway's website or on Intel's. Any ideas where I should be looking?
