Hi everyone, I've noticed my laptop has been running quite hot recently so I downloaded a thing called Speedfan, which tells me my CPU is running at 70-80 degrees C. Isn't this really, REALLY hot for a laptop?? I really don't want it to overheat and break =(

I first noticed it and found that it was maxing out at 82 degrees, and the movie I was watching was getting jumpy. I was using WMP, MSN, Internet explorer for basic browsing, with Vuze running in the background. The most I ever use. This is my specification:

    Acer Aspire 5535
    4GB RAM DDR2
    AMD Turion X2 Dual Core RM70 (2.0GHZ/1MB)
    320GB HDD

Shouldn't this laptop be able to handle these tasks without getting so hot?

    Help please =D
    Thanks,

    Kolroc

How old is the laptop? If it is more than 2 years old, when was the last time you cleaned the dust off the vents and fan? I also seem to recall there was some issue with AMD laptops not having their fans set to turn on to full power to prevent the processor getting hot.

RM series processors are not 2 years old.
Speedfan is not the best application for laptops.

You should use CORETEMP, or HWmonitor to read the temperatures of your processor. 70-80C is very hot. You should check out The Undervolting guide. AMD processors undervolt really good, so you should be able to knock the temperatures down to 60C or so

Cleaning the fan vents is also a good idea to keep your cooling system working properly

Download Superpi and run it so it max's out both cores at 100% and check the temperatures. If they are at 80*C thats about fine for under a load. If its idle at that temperature thats too hot. Mind you its the die on the top of the cpu thats ~80*C not the laptop.

Do you live in some kind of dusty environment? Or was it already that way when you got it?

There are softwares available which not only help you monitor the stress on your computer but also the temperature and enable you to adjust the voltage which can be very helpful in maintaining proper system temperature.. Anyway you really should fix that, laptops are easily ruined by such hot conditions..
