its a 500 GB external desktop drive...been using it for around 6 months+

these days...i plug it in...it says 'usb device not recognized' ..tried it on all laptops with XP, Vista n now windows 7.

it is getting power from AC Adaptor.

should i try changing the USB Cable?

and if i send it to Seagate...can they repair it without damaging the data?

Getting power... do you hear the drive spin up?

I had a maxtor drive on which the power supply failed - I also tested the power supply with a volt meter....

    Edit:
If it is the supply Seagate will send you a new one under warranty or you can buy it.

OK, so power adapter works :)

Does the HDD spin up? If not it could be actual disc damage or just failed "electronics"...

I really do not love any brand-name/pre-configured external enclosures and much prefer to build my own based on a Vantec solution.

If you send it back, they'll replace it without regards to your data - they don't guarantee that at all (how important is it? Could cost you up to $4,000 US to recover it). No HD or external enclosure manufacturer does, AFAIK.

I would remove the drive, connect it to a raw SATA/Power connectors on a desktop computer and try to recover your data that way. Then throw it away (if you voided the warranty by removing the HD).

Maxtor HD's? In 2003/4, I had over 40 of them die in many different systems - Maxtor? Never again.

    Good luck.

Doesn't Maxtor usually use Seagate drives?

OP: try switching cables and if it gets bad, try switching the enclosure. You'll void the warranty, but if your information is important enough, it's worth it.

Only since Maxtor was acquired by Seagate - nowadays its the same company.

My "Maxtor" is essentially a Seagate drive - I took it out of its enclosure though, it was getting hot... (its in its metal caddy still)

True. ;) Was mostly wondering if it was Seagates you refused to buy or just Maxtor. :D

    good idea.

i ll try to use another enclosure...if its possible to take it out of maxtor without damaging it.

    thanks guy.

no wonder it was selling so cheap...such a bad quality.

which brands would u recommend in terms of reliability?

if i dont want portability...is there any other benefit of 2.5" ?

    Maybe smaller energy consumption.

Western Digital and Seagate are the two big ones.
