I just bought a Gateway MX7525 the other day, and it's keyboard has a few media keys built in. they're standard play/pause, stop, skip forward+back, as well as volume and a key that fires up windows media player. My question is this: since the computer comes with windows media center edition on it, the keys are useful there, but I don't use windows media player as my only app, which is what these keys control. Is there any way to get them working with an application like winamp or itunes that can take controls like this? Like a program that will map them to either new programs or at least other functions? The play/pause/stop/fw/rv buttons are fn+key combos, but the volume buttons (which control system volume, so they're cool) and launcher button are hard off the keyboard. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    P.S. Hi!

Thanks for tipping me off with global hotkeys. A search on itunes global hotkeys turns up iRemote ( http://www.ipodsoft.com/index.php?/software/iremote), which enables global hotkeys for iTunes just fine. If you're looking for how to use media keys in itunes, try this first. Thanks drumfu!

    Hey.
Are you refering to remaping the quick-launch buttons? I have an older model of your laptop, and I did this. I remapped the mail, search, internet, etc keys for playback functions such as next, previous, stop, play/pause. Plus the program that I used has an OSD for volume (when you hit the volume, a nice display pops up in lower right hand corner). It's pretty neat.
You can download it here--and it's microsoft so it will work for sure :)
Just download one of the softwares for a keyboard (doesn't matter which one).

oh man thankyou! iRemote worked, but only when itunes had focus and it seems like it took up lots of resources too (i saw high cpu usage from it, no idea why). this works globally! :) you rule!
