Memorable Overclocking-Friendly CPUs Enjoy

Enthusiasts have been pushing the limits of silicon for as long as microprocessors have existed. Early overclocking endeavors involved soldering and replacing crystal clock oscillators, but that practice quickly evolved into changing system bus speeds via motherboard DIP switches and jumpers.

Internal clock multipliers were introduced but it didn't take long until those were locked down as unscrupulous sellers removed official frequency ratings and applied their own faster markings. System buses and dividers became key for most, while the ultra-enthusiast would physically change electrical specifications through hard modding.

The present landscape harks back to the advent of internal clock multipliers. System bus speeds have become increasingly regulated to maintain system stability, which has once again leveled the playing field for the competitive nature of overclocking.

Great idea for a thread, Brother @Papusan. A day without overclocking is like a day with no sunshine... dark, gloomy and not enjoyable.

The 7700K is truly an overclocking beast. It's not memorable (yet) because it's still current technology, but it is definitely remarkable.

I have enjoyed the daylights out of overclocking laptops for a good while. If I couldn't overclock the snot out of a computer, I wouldn't even want it any more. It would be as pointless and worthless to me as tits on a boar, and about as exciting to use as watching paint dry.

I have loved every minute of overclocking the crap out of laptops equipped with 7700K, 6700K, 4960X, 4930K, 4790K, 4930MX, 3920XM and 2920XM. All of those were great overclocking beast CPUs.

Thanks, Fox Yeah, OC'ing is a great way to relax on. I wanted to post this thread, because we all know how bad it has became with mobile cpu's and overclocking. Everything pushed out from Intel now is worthless low binned Filth!! Not intended for OC'ing. This Big thanks to Intel and the OEMs Greed. People need to be reminded of the good old days!!

7700k definitely best overclocker. some decent 4960x too but 7700k definitely takes the cake, could be because the 2 more cores on 4960x. mobile overclockable cpu are good compare to BGA but no where near what desktop good clocking standard.

 

i5-2500K and i7-2600K. The original 5 GHz beasts.

 

3920mx was pretty sweet but I always wanted the 2960 to crack the 5ghz which always seemed impressive. I also really like how the 7700k overclocks. 2 out of 2 chips I've owned easily crack 5ghz without any dramas.

 

you lucky! i never managed to get any chip thats 5ghz stable really, i can clock 3/4 cores to 5ghz and run stress test bench on AC and its stable without throttling but 4/4 never seem to pass on 2960xm, 3920xm and 3940xm lol.

 

I only achieved 5ghz+ with the 7700k's.
I had a 3920mx (QC) that could only do 4.3ghz and then a 3920mx (OEM) that was good for 4.6ghz.

 

I'd like to join @Mr. Fox OC University, but I don't have LGA DTR so most of the time I'd be standing outside staring at @Papusan , @Mr. Fox F5 tornado ( and SLI beast) @Phoenix (MSI beast on RAID mode) and I can only drool looking at their PCs.
Sorry if I missed mentioning their DTRs. I am a noob at remembering LGA/DTR owners
