Just ordered an Asus laptop - Asus UL30A and I would like to upgrade it to 8gb RAM. Is this possible as it is a 64bit system?

    Many thanks

Crucial says 4 GB is the max, though there are some GS45 laptops that do support 8 GB RAM.

Crucial say 4gb max but some people on here say crucial ram tool is not reliable.

I had a big discount on the laptop so I would like to invest in extra ram....

The question is how much RAM the CPU supports too....

CPU doesn't have anything to do with it, it's the chipset. I have a PM45 chipset (same timeframe). Asus and memory tools say the maximum is 4GB (4GB modules were uncommon when released), but it can actually take up to 8GB just fine. I'm running with 6GB (2GB+4GB) right now just fine.

It's the chipset and BIOS. Even if the chipset does the BIOS has to as well.

Another thing to note is the number of RAM slots. Some laptops come with a single RAM slot effectively limiting the RAM size to 4GB.

Thanks for the great responses, the laptop comes with with 3GB ram so presume it has 2 slots. I will buy a 4Gb stick to replace the 1Gb stuck first to make sure it "works"

Most 64bit OS can take 8GB RAM.
If the chipset supports 8GB RAM, update Bios can lift the 4GB limitation.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks Bill, the issue is that the crucial memory tool suggests that the Max memory is 4Gb, how do I find out is the chipset can support 8Gb?
