And a couple of other questionsHello all, my first post here, looks loke a cool board.

I need some help, I have a 2 month old Sony vgn s-460 notebook with a busted screen. I need the computer for my business so I ran off to Frys and bought a 550 dollar POS. I returned it two days later when the DVD went kaput and made them give me my money back. I then bought a Gateway MX6027 for something like 750-800 bucks. It's holding up pretty well for the first 3 days. But it's slow with only 256 mb of memory. Can I take a stick out of the sony while it's being repaired and install it in the Gateway? The stick from the sony is labeled:

    HYS64T32000HDL-5-A A4E51820
    256MB 1Rx16PCS-3200s-333-11-CO

The Gateway: Oops, I'm using it. Well I'll se if this is enough info and if not I'll pull it note it and post.

Also, is there a problem with XP Home OS? It seems every computer I have in the office has constant problems with unresponsive programs. Productivity is going down the drain.

Lastly, is ther a way to disable the popups within ones own suite of programs? Often a program will pop up with the same question 4 th 5 thousand times a day and all too often causes the program I was working on to freeze! Super frustrating to say the least.

Anyway, I thank you in advance for the help.

    Derek

512 is the absolute minimum amount of RAM to use XP with...

Since you have 256 thats probrably why its laggy.

The gateway uses pc2700 ram while the sony uses pc3200, I 'THINK' you can since the 3200 will clock itself down to match the ram...

But I'm not sure, don't do it yet

sounds like your users need more training in Windows and whatever other applications they are using. you can check for local training centers that offer many different courses for this type of thing. it's not uncommon to have them 7 days a week to make it more convenient for scheduling. for any proprietary applications, the vendor should be providing training for your users. this should be included in the price of the software as well as some form of support after installation.

what suite of programs? what pop ups? what do they say?

I guess my choice of the word "suite" wasn't the best. What I meant was the stuff that comes preloaded on the computer when purchased. Take Norton for example. It will pop open with a question about every 15 min or so. "Do you wanto to do this? Do you want to do that?" Most often I don't, had I wanted to, I would be doing so. I'll tell norton "No" and Norton does it anyway and causes the program I was in to freeze. I buy the thing, set it up, check for and download an endless stream of updates and go about my and attempt to go about earning a living only to have to reboot every hour or so.
Do you think it's due to the memory being at only 256? Hell my Treo has a card with 512 on it. 256 seems kinda rinky dink. I also subscribe to AOL and cant seem to get rid of their never ending offers to sell me stuff. I think that AOL might be too big for my 256. what about the memory from the Vaio? Should it work?

sounds like norton internet security trying to warn you about potentially dangerous actions.

    your choices are :

    1. go to a less strict security setting in norton
    2. read what the pop ups are asking and then allow the action always or allow by program
    3. disable norton
    4. uninstall norton and use a different application, if at all

note that those popups only happen when a new action accessing the internet occurs. you should take the time to carefully read what it is they are telling you/asking you to do and then adjust norton's behavior appropriately. also, are you consistently opening and closing your browser or other applications that access the web? if so, you should just leave the connection open and do what you have to do. also, if you are visiting webpages with potentially dangerous artifacts built into them, you will continually get these warning unless you do "1" above.

as a previous poster said, u need 512 megs of ram to run xp at a comfortable level.

i cannot in good faith condone the use of AOL for any reason unless you don't have broadband in your area and must use dialup and even then, there are better alternatives. this is especially true if you are already subscribing to a high speed internet connection (dsl or cable modem). you already have an ISP with the broadband provider, subscribing to AOL is redundant and is a waste of money.

Very true, AOL is a total waste. When I purchased my Vaio, AOL was there and it was easy to get going. As luck would have it I moved that week as well and needed something to get me online. And yes quite redundant as I also now have SBC Broadband. Thanks for the help.

I still am very interested in finding out if I can take a 256 module from the vaio and plug it into the Gateway. Can I actually damage the gateway if they prove not to be compatable? Or will it just sit there doing nothing? I have looked at both and while the shape of the cards are the same, the manufacture is different. The Gateway website doesn't show that the memory can be upgraded but it clearly can as there are two ports for it and only one is being used. Any thoughts?
