In July I bought 4GB of 2x2GB DDR2 800 and it was just under $41 shipped. Now, the cheapest you can get 4GB of laptop memory is for over $50. Does anybody know anything about this? Have manufacturers cut back on DDR2 manufacture or is there increased demand? Most importantly, will the prices go back down, stay the same, or continue to rise?

At least one fab in S Korea and another in the 'states have shut down. Apple is sucking up a lot of flash chips so a few other fabs have switched over to making flash for Apple. Other fabs are idle while they switch over to 45 and 32nm processes.
Other than that, you're asking for crystal-ball type of guessing. -
It fluctuates, just like anything can.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Memory manufacturers are also switching from making DDR2 to making DDR3. You may see some fluctuation in DDR2 prices as the economy starts getting a bit better, but in the longer run, the price of DDR2 is only going to go up as newer memory formats take over (kind of in the way that any respectable capacity of SDRAM costs a fortune).

This has been a concern to me as well
DDR2 ECC SDRAM more than doubled in price over the last 3 months.
I contacted Kingston about this, and it has nothing to do with a DDR3 switch.

You should be glad you got 4Gb RAM for the rather cheap price of $41.
My friend bought 1Gb RAM for like 55$ counting the shipping. (The shipping was no more than five bucks) -
Why not try buying 2nd hand DDR2 memories instead of buying a brand new one. I remember, when I bought my DDR2 memory and try to buy a DDR-400 for my friend's PC, the 1GB of DDR-400 is the same price of 2GB DDR2.
This could be the trend, the older gets a little pricey because of the lack in supply. -

Doesn't look like 4GB DDR2 sodimms will ever become properly affordable

Well I suppose it's a good thing that by the time an average user needs more than 4GB of memory in a laptop, current DDR2 laptops would be ancient?
Maybe netbooks would be quad core and have DDR4 memory by then -
Google shopping yields 2x4GB DDR2-800 at $360 (PSD28G800SK) while 2x4GB DDR3-1067 at $509 (CT2KIT51264BC1067). Not cheap but still cheaper.
If you need that much memory, then you can probably justify the expense. If you can't, then you probably don't need it...

2x2GB DDR2-800 sodimm sticks are still skyrocketing in price. The cheapest I can find now are over $70, compared to $55 when I made this thread! It is getting into cheap DDR3 territory.

Now those prices are getting rather ridiculous. Makes me glad I got my memory upgrade a month ago.

really. looking at ebay I can pick 2x2gb pc6400 up for under 35 quid. Still much more expensive than the 22 quid I spend for the 4gigs I already have!
Why are prices suddenly rising...I was hoping to pick up 2x4gb pc6400 for less than 100quid in about a year
Memory prices increasing?
