    Hi,
I have a problem with my laptop.
My laptop processor is running very very slow, only 5% of it's original speed.
    Below is my laptop specifications:

    Compaq CQ20-213TU
    T5800 @ 2.00 Ghz
    3GB DDR 400 RAM
    Intel GMA (1GB shared)
    250GB HDD
    Windows XP Pro SP3

    Here is the screenshots.

I'm using AC power, not battery.
I have already upgrade the BIOS and reset the BIOS settings to default.
Anyone here know how I can get my laptop processor running at full speed again?
    Your help is greatly aprreciated.
    Thanks.

Are you on Power Saver plan? Try re-installing Windows.

I don't use any power saver plan at all. As for reinstalling Windows, will it work?
I'm afraid to do that because if it didn't work it will take a lot of time reinstalling windows with this slow processor.

How long have you been having this issue? Is the multiplier locked to 0.5 all the time? Sounds like a broken cpu

You can also download Ubuntu 10.4 and boot from CD. Once you're in the system, open terminal and type /proc/cpuinfo. That will allow you to see whether the problem is hardware or software related

That would certainly be rare, but it's possible. I can count on one hand, the amount of bad processors I've seen.

@OP: What is the BIOS reporting?

EDIT: Maybe reset your CMOS settings and see what that does for you.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Like opening your notebook casing? I'll try that when I have downloaded the manual.

I do noticed the slowdown but I thought it is because of HDD,virus
    or even spyware.
After doing a complete maintenance, the slowdown is still there.
Nope. The multiplier on some occasion gone up to x1.0 at max.
As for Ubuntu , I do have some older version, can I use that instead?

Quite long. I've installed Soluto on my laptop. It takes around 15mins after all the processes fully loaded.

BIOS reporting? I don't see any info about the processor in the HP bios.
Only when I push F1, it shows the Sys Info.
How do you reset CMOS settings on your laptop?
I know how to do it on a desktop, maybe I'll try reading the manual 1st.

Thanks and I'll post update later.

    Of course, you can.

    Ouchh!

try pressing TAB on BIOS boot logo, it might change it to show full POST.
You can reset the bios on HP laptops by unplugging all the power sources, taking the battery out and then hold the power button down for about 30 seconds.

That didn't work. I read in the manual that I have to take out the RTC battery for 5 minutes to clear CMOS.

Also, the /proc/cpuinfo in Ubuntu show that both cores are running at 800Mhz.

In Ubuntu add the CPU control widget to the task-bar. Then change it to high performance or whatever. I think in Ubuntu the default power plan is called On Demand. So it runs the processor at minimum(800mhz). Is it sluggish in Ubuntu, besides being run from a CD? If processor works fine in Ubuntu, sound like its a Windows problem.

I would take the opportunity to install Windows 7 and eliminate any possible software problem.

Sure does. In ubuntu, right click on the taskbar at the top of the screen, and select the CPU Scaling Widget, and set it to "Performance" or whatever it says is the Max CPU Freq, and see what it reports. When it can't change anything it will tell you, or at the least, give you an error.

well, the fact that Ubuntu shows 800Mhz already proves the point that there is something wrong with Windows and not the actual hardware.

Have u tried to restore windows to an earlier point in time?

may be it is time to upgade to 7 =)
