Several of us travel, but all of us really need two monitors to do our work quickly. Instead, when out of the office, we cramp up on one laptop monitor, because regular monitors are too heavy to lug around.

What mobile computerists like us need is a lightweight, portable monitor that slips in the bag. Ideally, it should be WUXGA at 1920x1200 res, but we might squeak by on WSXGA+ at 1680x1050 or UXGA at 1600x1200. A 15.4" display would be fine. My current laptop is 15.4" WUXGA 1920x1200 and it works great, even using it intensely for 12 hours a day, as I do.

Ideally, somebody would make both 15.4 and 17" portable monitors, so you can match the monitor to your laptop and laptop bag. The monitors should weigh about 2 pounds or less, and have a light stand that collapses neatly to the back of the monitor. A final wish would be rotatability, for users who need a vertical workspace for finance or investment, for example.

Has anyone seen or heard of such a monitor? Any manufacturer's paying attention here? Do I need to buy another computer and tear off the monitor and build my own? (Uh, no thanks.)

We need 4 of them yesterday, and can't find such a thing. Thoughts or help appreciated.

    Thanks

I know what you mean, I use two monitors and it's hard to go back to using the laptop display while traveling. It feels like going from 3d to 2d.

But I don't think it's feasible to carry an extra monitor around. Carrying the laptop through airports is trouble enough, carrying a fragile screen along too would be too much.

When I get to a remote office I usually talk the local IT guy into finding me a spare CRT monitor to put on my desk. Most offices have spares around. Even if it's a 10-year old 15" monitor it at leave gives me a 2nd display to keep email, etc. open.

    That certainly would be great.

Or better yet, How about a second screen that slides our from the side of the main screen. Obviously it would make laptops a little thick, but it would be nice at times.

Apple's older 15" LCD display has all of the attributes you need except that it may be a bit heavy. You can get them real cheap on e-bay.
