Taiwanese overclocking Guru Coolaler got his hands on one of Intel's upcoming mobile Penryn X9000 CPUs and has done a short preview of what will be offered. The CPU is clocked at 2.8GHz and it will be the fastest of Intel's mobile CPUs, come the Santa Rosa refresh early next year.
The CPU features 6MB of L2 cache and it operates on an 800MHz FSB. With regard to the CPU in question, it was an engineering sample and a B1 revision, so it is not quite ready for the mainstream as yet.
There's very little information about the notebook it was fitted to, apart from that it was using a GeForce 8600M GT graphics card, a screen resolution of 1280x800, had 2GB of RAM and was running Windows Vista Home.
The CPU managed to score 2,569 points in the CPU test in 3DMark06 and the overall test score was 3,451. It would finish a 1M run of SuperPi in 16.973 seconds and a 32M run in 18min 58.473 seconds.

Wow--that's pretty damn fast.

Fast as hell! But pointless to replace your T7500 or T7700 with this one, when you look at the price. I don't think i'll switch CPU until Montevina or Cantiga

That's not that high of a composite 3dmark06 score. Must be the DDR2 version of the 8600M GT, but even then I scored better with 169.02 drivers at stock frequencies (3546). And my processor is "only" 2.2 GHz.
The CPU score is proportionally higher, though - 2569 v. 1913. That's more of an increase than the proportional change in GHz, so Penryn is making a difference.
Temperature is kinda high - 93 Celsius. I haven't seen my T7500 above 82 Celsius. -
@ Apollo13, you can't really compare your CPU score Vs the X9000's though. As its running at faster speed.
To make a fair comparison, you need to take Intel's current 2.8Ghz mobile CPU - the X7900. And it seems a X7900 can get 2400 points in the CPU test. So really, not much of an improvement. I think the best thing about penryn will be the power usage - not improved performance (don't get me wrong, performance will be better, but not by a huge amount). -
