Hey guys, I have a Gateway P-7811 FX laptop and I have a few issues concerning my cpu clocking down during gameplay. The gateway 7811 has a P8400 which you may know is clocked at 2.26 ghz. Almost any time I play games on it the games will run perfectly fine and then the frames will drop I've used both cpu-z and gpu-z to monitor clock speeds of both the video card and the proccessor. The 9800M GTS will stay clock at its maximum. But, I've noticed that any time the game will slow down it will be the result of the processor clocking down to 1.6 ghz. The processor will not clock back up and the game will become unplayable. I've used RightMark but it doesn't help to keep it clocked up. I was wondering if any of you 7811FX owners have noticed this and if you have, have you been able to fix it.

Make sure your computer is set to "high performance" mode, and make sure that the processor is not overheating.

ecurules7811fx, take a look at the thread above. Basically it says you should put it to "Balanced" rather than "High performance", because heat issues in high performance can cause CPU to downclock and work against you, while "Balanced" will change based on demand and won't overheat. -
If your CPU is downclocking due to overheating, you have very serious issues that needs to be resolved ASAP through a technician or via RMA. -
Ah yes.. download HWMonitor and post up your min and max temps while gaming for your CPU, GPU and HDD.

core 1 62 avg 68 high both celcius
core 2 65 avg, 71 high both celcius
9800M GTS 75 avg 82 high
i think its worth noting that this is after 30 minutes of gameplay
i was using a notebook cooler
the processor clocked down three or four times during gameplay
i also noticed a few of you also have p series processors and was wondering has this ever occured to you. i was thinking this clockdown may be due to the fact that the processors are designed to clockdown to save power.
this really shouldn't be happening because I think the processors are supposed to clock up any time they are stressed past 50% cpu usage. i have watched it and it has clocked down with the computer being stressed past 50%
i was considering two options one, i was going to put a new processor probably a T9600 or i was going to apply more thermal paste because gateway probably did'nt put enough -
What 3DMark06 scores are you getting? What is usually the norm for your laptop?
I'm guessing like 8000-9000 -
ive never tested it but its like 9000 i think
i can tell you that call of duty world at war runs at 1920x1200 with everything all the way up and no aa at like 35 to 40 FPS and lows of like 30 that is of course when the processor is running at 2.26 ghz -
Just a quock question: how do you know that your CPU is being underclocked? Just alt-tabbing while playing a game might not be enough - the CPU may underclock in the time that you're getting out of the game.
-
i'm running the game in windowed mode and running cpu-z right beside the game window
-
If you lower the graphical settings, are there any slowdowns in a non-windowed mode?

Using HWMoniter during a game, does it ever show a spike in the TSZ0?
In the 7811 there is a bug that will cause the CPU to down clock because the TTSZ0 will falsely read 98degrees.
This is more likely than not the cause of your headaches -
im sorry guys i didn't realize you guys replied, i didn't see that it had gone to a second page. what is the TTSZO? is there a solution?
-
oh its, the temp sensors, sorry i didn't realize at first
-
alright so i did notice that it was reading 98, it was before reading 79 and then it jumped up

Your CPU is throttling.
I can help you mod your dsdt in your registry to dissable throttling if you want.
See this thread (read on from this page):

two users on that thread confirmed that the change I made in the code worked to stop throttling.
