quad core Mobile Core 2 Extreme 2.40GHz

    i7-820QM 1.73GHz

all of them are the ES version
and they are almost the same price

according to this site , the 820QM is even faster than the QX9300
    Notebookcheck: Mobile Processors - Benchmarklist

but this site shows the QX9200 is just slightly slower than the 920XM
PassMark Intel vs AMD CPU Benchmarks - High End

    after overclocking to 2.80GHz (312x9) and 1.93GHz (149x13)
(max overclocking on the MSI-1651 and MSI-1656 laptop using setfsb)

    which will be faster ?

    I am now using a QX9200 and GTS 160M (MSI-1651 ID2)
look forward to upgrading to the MSI-1656 with 820QM and HD5850

I am afraid that the CPU would be downgraded :(

use the setfsb alter the FSB from 133MHz to 145MHz (149 max)

but the i7-820QM CPU turbo boost like this , like cheating

    single core 3.06GHz
    dual core 2.4GHz
    quad core 1.86GHz

I am loving the Q9200 quad core permanently 2.93GHz (OC)

The Q9200 can do more then that if your using an msi machine,

Try unlock the multi with throttlestop.

yes i tried to use the software

but it just can be alter from 9 to 9.X (just IDA mode ?)

I cant get higher multi on this QX9200 :(

    ICS9LPRS113AKLF
    no change

all the MSI PM55 / HM55 mainbroad use that PLL
    MSI-GX640/GT640/GX740/GT740

other laptop may have a TME-locked

    thanks so much :)

now 3204MHz quad core stable :D

    QX9200 - QX9770 :D

I guess after overclocking it will outperform the i7-940XM 2.13GHz (with single core turbo boost to 3.4GHz)

92C! You want to keep the CPU temp under 80C. Even with my hotter Q9650 I won't get much over 65C at load and 80C is the throttle temp.

Agreed, I would also watch that GPU temp.

Maybe time for new thermal paste?

Holy crap. You OCed an 820QM. Could you provide me the details?

And i'm pretty sure the 820QM is better than the Q9200 because it's more clocks are more efficient or something like that.

He has an ES model and I have one too, so I'm just trying it out. I think he might have gotten lucky, but I may have also gotten an unlocked one (I bought an ES too).

Edit: By details, I mean steps. I know you used setFSB.

A constant 3.2ghz on all 4 cores vs the 820qm. Well even though the instruction pipelines are different which means you cant look at just ghz speed the 4x at 3.2ghz constantly is going to outperform the 820qm and almost every task. I would take a constant 3.2ghz on 4 cores even on an older core 2 architecture over the 1.93ghz overclocked 820qm it will pwn it.

    old C2Q 2.40GHz = $189

    new i7-820QM = $449
    i7-820QM = $549
    i7-920XM = $649
    i7-940XM= $799

    after overclocking
    im pretty sure that 3.33GHz C2Q outperform a i7-940XM @ 2.13GHz

more MHz brings higher MIPS and FLOPS in the same time

    C2Q @ 2.88GHz
    3DMark06 CPU score : 4852

    i7-920XM @ 2.0GHz
    3DMark06 CPU score : 3806
