A few days ago I was just about to buy a laptop with a p8700 processor, and now I'm extremely glad that I didn't, not only will I get a much more powerful i7 but it will be for nearly the same price :)
So it got me thinking, is there some other new laptop technology that's around a corner (next few months)? Like new series of GPUs, new ram or something else?

I suppose the next big thing would be new graphics cards, AMD has just launched their new HD5000 series cards for desktops and they should be in laptops by early next year. Depending on the model of laptop you buy, you may be able to upgrade to them later onwards.

I think the best time to buy a laptop is when the GT 300 nvidia gpus (and ati's hd5000 wtv is available for your laptop). It also depends on the notebook you're looking at.

You'll be waiting another year for those to actually be released realistically. By then there will be HD 6xxx and GT 400 being announced... there won't be any major releases in the next few months, until the mainstream i7s come out in Q1 2010 (again, you will most likely get these in your hands earliest late Feb-early Mar).

Yeah that's what I don't know.. when these new gpus are coming. I mean, the mid-range 200 series from nvidia are just coming out right now in notebooks..

It is a good time to buy since a brand new technology came out (i7). I'm not sure how long you'd have to wait for something new.

Oh but what about usb 3.0??

To get all of these, I think you will have to wait til mid 2010 earliest.

    how about sata3.

If you are waiting till mid 2010 it would be better to hold off till sandy bridge releases. That is designed by the same team as merom and should make a great mobile cpu.

Sandy Bridge likely won't be out until late 2010 or early 2011.

Like Jay said, Sandy Bridge wont be out til late '10, likely to give westmere time to cycle. And whats more is, thats the desktop version. It took close to a year for Nehalem to be mobilized, so if this trend follows, then thats likely mid-late '11 for Sandy Bridge.

i remember reading somewhere that sandy bridge would launch with mobile cpus. Plus unlike 45nm where intel released montevina refresh during 2nd half 2008, there wont be another refresh for nehalem. So sandy bridge should release by next year end.

I don't think it will, I'm sure Intel will want the Calpella platform to live as long as possible.
