Just today my monitor started acting up. For some reason now I get flickering horizontal lines that are moving upwards. My monitor is a brand new dell 24" S2409W so I don't think its a monitor issue. I've checked the cables and theyre snug and undamaged and the refresh rate is set at 60hz which is default.
When not using the external monitor and using the notebook monitor, i dont see the horizontal lines.
Anyone else have a similar issue or know how to solve this? The lines are driving me nuts
edit: also i should note it was working perfectly 3 hours ago. i took the monitor out to pack my laptop, and then when i came back and reassembled everything i got the horizontal lines.

Have you tried different resolutions?
What connection do you use? HDMI, DVI, VGA?
Have you tried a different connection. Have you tried to connect the monitor to a different PC or multimedia center with HDMI or DVI out? -
im using the blue cable with the pins... not sure what that one is called.
the monitor also came with a dvi to dvi cable but the only slot my laptop has is for the blue pin cable -

You'll have to try another connection, PC or device to test if the monitor is faulty, the cable or your notebook. -
okay so i'm 100% sure it's not a monitor problem. i hooked up my laptop to a few other monitors and the problem is the same. i also tried using a different computer with my monitor and the problem doesnt show up.
however, when im not using an external monitor and i use the notebook monitor, i cant see the problem at all. everything seems perfectly fine. -

Seems as if you've damaged your VGA out port.
You could try a system restore to check if it's driver fault, but I think it's a hardware failure.
If you still have warranty, send it in, if not, then you have a problem.
If you don't have warranty and send it in, then I expect that they'll replace the whole mainboard which will be expensive.
I also don't know what's damaged, maybe a broken solder joint on the connector (does the image and the lines change if you wobble the connector?), or maybe a voltage regulator/capacitor/... died. Difficult, mabe someone else knows something more about such a failure. -

Try using the notebook on battery power (yes I know it's strange, but you may have a grounding prob).
If there is no flickering on battery power, it's likely a grounding issue. -
damaged ports damaged cables yada yada- check the refresh rate.
