    The question is pretty obvious:

I'm a total computer noob, and want to monitor my alienware cpu and gpu temperatures :)

Personally I use HWMonitor, some people like Core Temp.

Quick note, if you run it as admin you have access to a lot more of the sensors.

For some reason it doesn't show my GPU temps; under the "ATI MR 5850" tab there's only a "voltage" subsection...

I don't know if this has anything to do with that, but my Catalyst Control Center doesn't work... I have no idea if that is related, since I don't even know what CCC does -.-

god I need to educate myself :p

    I use HWiNFO64.
Clicking on the sensor tab shows all the thermal sensors on my notebook.

Catalyst Control Center lets your tweak your graphics; it shouldn't affect temperature displays.

I use Speccy from Piriform to monitor temps if you want an alternative.

Use HW Monitor. Sometimes my video card does not show up since it's using the integrated Intel card.

I use HW Monitor when I need GPU temps, and keep Core Temp in my system tray for CPU temps. On my X120e, I use TPFanControl's temperature monitor. I can also configure DesktopInfo to display temperature, but you know how the saying goes, "A man with one clock will always know the time, a man with two can never be sure" :p

If you want to monitor your GPU temps while gaming, there's MSI Afterburner. Another alternative for GPU Monitoring is GPU-Z which also shows detailed data on your GPU. Also, if you use sidebar gadgets, you can monitor your CPU with All CPU Meter with the CoreTemp plugin.
