If I buy a Montevina laptop late-summer/early-fall, will I be able to upgrade my Penryn processors to Nehalem once it comes out?

Yes you can. Once it comes out. Only the Desktop version is out right now, but once Nehalem mobile comes out, yes, you can upgrade your Penryn processors to it.

Unless your processor is soldered to the motherboard of course.

I wouldn't count on it. As Nehalem uses an entirely new architecture, It'll likely ues a new socket. And from what I can see on the internet, it does.

Besides, the desktop version won't fit in present motherboards

fabarati's right. Nehalem uses a new socket as reported on the Nehalem leak earlier (I'll look for the link).

They said (for desktops) that there might be some LGA775 Nehalem processors but I wouldn't count on their being all that good because of the fact that all previous architectures had FSBs whereas Nehalem will eliminate one altogether.

Edit: Forte...Nehalem's out already? Link please?

Desktop Montevina will use LGA1366 or LGA1160.

    Notebook will use mPGA989.

I thought they weren't coming out until end of this year/beginning of '09 for desktops. End of '09 for notebooks?

No, you cannot. It will be impossible since the architecture will be completely different.

    Your sentence does not compute.

Core 2 is Intels present multi-core CPU.

Montevina is the next generation centrino platform, that uses the second generation "penryn" 45nm mobileCore 2 Duo processors, along with the GL40, GS45, GM45, GM47 or PM45 chipsets and Some intel wireless cards. Will be released in a few days.

"Nehalem" is the codename for intels next CPU's. No one knows what they will be called. I'm 100% sure that it won't be Core 2, though. Penryns WON'T be upgradable to Nehalems.

Intel comes out with a "new" platform every year, wherein the only change in the increased FSB. True change will come with Calpella platform (Q3 2009) where they'll get rid of FSB. And the bandwidth will be comparable to 1600 MHz FSB. But, Calpella laptops will become mainstream only by summer 2010. And by that time, quad cores for laptops will have become affordable as well.

Looks like 2010 will be the best time to get a new laptop, unless ofcourse you need one now. What do you guys think?
