i'd say they'll only be like what, 300 bucks higher at most? depending on config. they have to keep prices moderately low since it's all back to school shopping at this point? idk though.

also AMD's PUMA line is very in-expensive, so i really dont see Intel going too crazy with the price.

They are actually all the same prices as the previous penryns except for the higher clocked ones like 2.8ghz which is more expensive. Though just because intel prices them the same doesnt mean manufacturers will too. You pay a premium for early adoption. :)

so does that mean the dell studio will be getting centrino 2 on Monday? Or do we still have to wait a while before centrino 2 is in a laptop?

I've been wondering the same thing... usually Dell updates their laptops pretty quickly but you never know. They might not update all their laptops at once either.

So consequently, any notebooks with dual mode graphics will also be delayed--clearly Thinkpads have been delayed into August.

Is that true? Would ddr3 modules fit into the same memory slot or what?

No, just like how on desktops DDR3 will not fit into DDR2 slots. For example, the Lenovo new T series will use DDR3 SO-DIMMs and the memory will not be compatible with the current T61 series.

Yes they are both the same physical size and unless there are any restrictions from the motherboard, both ddr2 and ddr3 ram should work in montevina laptops.

I thought DDR3 used less volatage (1.5 V versus 1.8 for DDR2) and had the key notch in a different location. Am I missing something ?

DDR2 and DDR3 and not compatible. You cannot use both in a laptop. SpacemanSpiff is correct.

That's weird i'm pretty sure i've read that they're compatible as long as the motherboard can take advantage of both. Oh well i'll just wait and see...

There may (may) be some desktop motherboards that have separate slots for the two memory types, but I don't think it is very likely that this practice will be adopted on notebooks--mainly just due to limited space.

I'm kind of curious as to which release most people are waiting for.
For instance, I'm more interested in the GMA x4500 (GM chipset), because that coupled with the increased FSB (both RAM and CPU) would give a very nice boost in performance, just what I need, vs. a dedicated graphics card which would be overkill for my needs.
While others are waiting for the dedicated solution, which wouldn't give quite as much a boost in performance compared to what's already offered.
As it looks now, the PM chipset will be released tomorrow, but the GM chipset (x4500 integrated graphics) wont be released until some time in august.

I have got some bench marks for you guys. Found in a Hong Kong magazine yesterday. The computer benched is the AOpen XC Mini MP45-DR which essentially is like a mini PC (think mac mini). It uses the latest centrino 2 platform.

    Specs...
    P8400 2.26GHz
    4GB DDR2 800mhz ram
    250GB 5400rpm seagate hdd
    GM45 + ICH9M

From the mag it showed a screen shot of GPU-Z of the X4500. Do not ask me as to why they tested it @ WUXGA... The HD3200 scored 1131 3dmarks @ WSXGA+.

According to our friends at powernotebooks.com and xoticpc.com, which intel may release the chipset tomorrow that resellers cannot begin to market the new platforms until Tueday at 11:00PM PST. I am not sure if that is just a US requirement but that is when their NDA expires.

I'm not so sure. Look at this.
It says coming 6pm PT on Monday, July 14... of course nobody but Sony knows for sure, but it could be speculated that's a montevina release.

There have been benchmarks of Acers and Compals on Montevina.

Acer in the news forum, Compal in the Compal forum (or was it sager?).

I'm pretty sure that will be the announcement of Sony's Z, SR and FW models. More info in the Sony forum.

I wonder if Intel will also bundle their High Performance SSD with Montevina. There's a reason they named it Turbo Memory 2.0, though that doesn't necessarily mean their high performance version is going to Centrino 2.

Hoping it creates a small revolution :).

Oh, and the Hybrid Graphics or w/e it'll be named. It'll work with ATI/Nvidia discrete graphics and Intel IGPs. I think we'll see a justification of the new name :).

Actually, it won't... The DDR3 sticks are too low clocked, with too much latency for them to show any performance increases. However, memroy performance isn't really important for overall performance.

Man.....the Centrino 2 was way over-hyped. Its just another evolutionary product, nowhere revolutionary as the "Centrino 2" moniker would suggest.

There are some good things about the platform. One great feature of the platform is showcased in the Sony Vaio Z. You now have the ability to switch between integrated graphics and dedicated without restarting your computer! DDR3 ram can increase battery life, P series processors use less power than the old T series, quad core processors are now an option, and intels X45 is capable of playing HD content with help of ATI or Nvidia graphics.
