With the introduction of montevina, there will clearly be some hardware upgrades. I know that it will support DDR2 667, DDR2 800, DDR3 800, DDR3 1066, and DDR3 1333. That's quite the jump from the last generation of centrino, which introduced only DDR2 533 and DDR2 667. These days, on the Santa Rosa platform, all we see is DDR2 667, but because of such a variety of capabilities with Montevina, what will we mostly be seeing? How long will it be before all notebooks have DDR3 800/1066/1333? Will notebooks ever have the DDR3s as a standard?
And another question, what's the difference between the two:
the Intel WiFi Link 5100/5300 mini-PCIe adapter (code-named Shiloh), and the add-on card WiMAX (802.16) (code-named Dana Point), or
the Intel combo WiFi/WiMAX Link 5150/5350 mini-PCIe adapter (code-named Echo Peak).
does the top one have a wifi N card, with another card that enables WiMAX? Does that mean that the motherboard will physically have two mini PCIe slots?

I don't think DDR3 will come to mainstream computers sooner.DDR3 RAM will be a optional choice for most of us due to high price, maybe Alienware will introduce them to m15x/m17x
-
DDR3 laptops will come out very soon, but just like its desktop counterparts, they will be pricey and will take some time for prices to come down to mainstream level. Give it a year or so.
-
DDR3 memory modules are 204 pin, DDR2 are 200 pin.
The Clevo M860TU features DDR3 RAM, so I figure it can`t use DDR2.
Montevina should normaly and idealy serve as a bridge towards faster and better performance, seing as DDR3 can be up to 30% more efficient that DDR2.
The Wimax is supose to be the next big deal in wireless networking... -
No I know what wimax is, but I was asking about the cards. THere are two available, one single card, and one wifi card PLUS a wimax add on card or something. Nonetheless I got my answer, thanks guys!

Man i feel stuck here...i wanted to order my dv6700tse HP Notebook today but with all this talk about Montevina (aka Centrino 2 vPro) i think it might be worth the wait...what do u guys think?...after all it has support for DDR3 RAM, i'm sure it will support better Graphics Cards, the FSB will be at 1066MHz which i really care about (Speed)..so i think i might just wait it out instead of rushing to buy now and be sorry later. I'm not in college anymore, but i'm really sick and tired of my old laptop..and can't wait to get a new one..it's killing me..i'm ready to move on to Vista Ult. 64 which i was planning to get with the laptop i was gonna order...idk, i guess wilsonywx summed it up well in a thread i was browsing when he said:
Any input/replies/advice will be greatly appreciated. -
makaveli72, I feel your pain it affects us all. It is a game you can't win. Even when you wait you will still suffer the same fate. Maybe you will get an extra 3 or 4 months before you feel surpassed but it will happen and will happen faster than your liking for what you are going to spend. Yes this is a bigger jump because of the platform transition. But how much did people spend one year ago to get a notebook with a T7300? Now they can get notebook with T9300 for much less. You can't win. My opinion is buy when you need. Suffering (waiting) does little to avoid the inevitable and just adds pain in my opinion. Good luck however you choose.
-
if you're thinking of waiting, u cud try going for a puma/griffin based laptop. The new amd chipsets are set to be released slightly sooner than centrino 2, and amd said there will be 100+ designs at launch ( you'll have a lot of choice of what to buy), whereas if you were gonna go for a centrino 2 most manufacturers would gradually introduce the chipset meaning you wudn't have as much a choice. Puma well surpasses centrino 2 for graphics and centrino 2 does likewise for power. So its graphics + alot of choice vs speed + little choice. Take ur pick
-
Heck, I have reached the conclusion that Montevina is worth the wait.
I mean,it`s only about 1 month and a half away... -
thanks for the replies so far guys...yea i think imma wait it out and customize a laptop with the Centrino 2vPro...i already have alot of money saved for it...it just gives me a little more time to save up some more to add on to my configuration.
So i guess i wouldn't be getting that dv6700tse Special Edition laptop again...because i'm sure HP's gonna create an entirely new design to go along with the Montevina....i really liked that ceramic white finish too!
-
HP is not the only one switching to the Montevina.
I say do a little more research, think about what you want the laptop to do, fill out this FAQ and you will get more answers... -
I don't think you understand...I Love HP..idk y but i can't see myself going for any other brand in this computer technology. Nevertheless i'll go through the FAQ that u suggested.
...Then again, i already know what i want! -
Dude, I LOVE HP too. Right now I`m typing on my 2.5 year old HP NX9420 ...
But when it comes to performance, I have other places to look at -
