I have a Compaq V2000 laptop(bought at xmas 2005), and it has the intel graphics. Whenever I run the smallest 3d applications, the computer hangs and then the video driver crashes, and the computer switches to the original VGA mode from Windows 2.x (looks pathetic). I would like to know the following:

Is it possible to change the graphics chip on the motherboard (it is called "integrated graphics")?
Is it possible to swap the motherboard inside my laptop for a newer one with the ATI graphics chip?
If it is possible to swap motherboards, where would I buy the ATI motherboard?
Or, should I just go about buying a new computer(if i do, i would get one without the silly widescreens)

If it would help, I am planing to buy more memory to install and Windows XP Pro if I am not going to buy anotehr computer.:ati:

    Nope.
I suppose all is possible depending on your skill level.
    See above.
I think this really your best option. Generally widescreens have better GPUs.
More memory will help, but not much.

You can't do anything but number four.

I should probably create a duplicate of this and stick it in here . . it is 100% impossible to upgrade integrated graphics; actually, 99% of laptops are impossible to upgrade, even if they are dedicated.

OMG! Never go to CompUSA!!! If you're interested in swapping out components, look at this google search:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...lla:en-US:official&q=mxm+vs+axiom&btnG=Search

I have a Maximum PC Magazine where they built a badass machine for $1500, complete with upgradeable graphics module. If you ever want to upgrade, this is the way to go. My next noteboook will be DIY. The biggest things to consider when building: Intel or AMD, & ATI or nVidia? Everything else is cake.

wow, you really need to take some time and do some research. if you had done so initially, you wouldn't have bought a notebook with an integrated gpu when you knew you were going to be doing 3d stuff.

buying from compusa is a huge mistake.

learn what it is you really need and then fill out the what should i buy? sticky in the what should i buy? forum
