Hi, I'm new to the forums, I've just bought a new toshiba satelite M50. I'm not new to computers, but new to notebooks. Now as it only has a celeron M and the 200M graphics, it's not the quickest thing around.
Can I upgrade the CPU to some thing decent? eg a pentium M?
Or could I replace the whoe CPU + motherboard instead? There was the pentium M + X600 graphics version of the laptop but I don't really know about building laptops.
So would it work? Or am i better off just putting more memory in it and leaving it at that?
Oh and I got the notebook pretty cheap, so if it cost a bit to do I'm not fussed.
Thanks for any help![]()

Mobo upgrades are nearly impossible to do in most laptops. The mobo has to fit the case and each different model laptop usually has it's own specific case (and it's own specific mobo which fits the case). I'm not 100% certain, but I believe Pentium M and Celeron proc's are not interchangable. Personally, I think you are likely stuck with your current configuration, although you could get a faster celeron proc and more ram.

The motherboard is from the same series laptop, just different upgrade kinda things, it should be the same case, just different mobo, they are far more comman than the celeron version that I have too. I just don't want to go and blow all that money on some thing I couldn't use.
Thanks for your help -
My advice you'll be better off saving some and buying a new laptop. As you know(if you have surfed around the forums a bit) Intel/AMD, both are releasing dual core versions of the mobile cpu's and by the end of the year there will also be a 64bit version of the dual core series from Intel. Add to this Windows Vista is also around the corner and adding to that newer generation graphics cards are also being released(X1X00 series from ATI and the Geforce 7 series from Nvidia).
That being said in most cases upgrading the MB is frankly not recommended even if they belong to the same series. The chances of it not working are very high and unless you can find a cheaper one on ebay or someplace, the upgrade will be expensive. Also a cheaper more easier alternative if you can use the integrated graphics would be to just upgrade the cpu. The celeron m and Pentium M should be pin compatible. -
OK, thanks for the help
