My compaq v5207nr has a Celeron 410 1.46ghz in it on a 940GML chipset. I was reading around the net and people said a core duo would work in it. Now, I put the core duo in and the laptop boots up with a blank screen. I really don't wanna give up on the upgrade so I searched around a bit more. My laptop has the 430199-001 motherboard with the "de-featured" chipset. If I were to get the 430198-001 "full-featured" with 945GM used in other v5000, would it support core duo and fit in my laptop?

Before you upgrade the processor did you update the Bios on your laptop?
If not you should install the celeron 410 back in, and go to HP/Compaq's website. Than download the newest bios revision for your system. After installing the latest bios revision you should shut the system off and try installing the core duo cpu again.
The T2500, T2600, T2700 should not have any problem running in your system.

My bios isn't the newest one, but it is several revisions ahead of the version that added support for Core Duo. I have revision F.23A, which is newer than F.13A that added support Core Duo. My Core Duo is T2050

    F.13A
    # Adds support for NVIDIA nForce 7600 Graphics.
    # Adds support for resuming from Suspend mode and notebook Power On by using the Power button and Media button on the Microsoft Media Center Edition remote control.
    # Adds support for HP Deluxe Remote Control.
    # Adds support for Intel Core Duo Processor T2050, Intel Core Duo Processor T2250, and Intel Core Solo Processor T1350.
    # Fixes issue with notebooks configured with the Intel 940GML chipset, where notebook stops responding (hangs) when switching screen to CRT in Dual mode.

I will put the Celeron back in and flash to the newest F.24A, which says:

    F.24A
Enhancements: Fixes intermittent issue where the notebook cannot boot.

The T2050 you have will work without any problems.

If you ever need to upgrade the processor in the future, you can go upgrade as fas as the T2700 if you like.

I don't think the 940GML supports dual-core processors. I don't think it's a matter of official support either; I recall a post from a long time ago stating that the 943 is the hard limit for dual-core support.

If you got the full featured one you would need a new base. The full featured ones with the 945GM chipset also have a pcmcia slot a card reader and you will need the extra USB daughter board for the right side below express card slot. I had a similar laptop with a celeron 410 i played it safe and put in a core duo t1350 and it worked great. If you want 64bit with that motherboard you could buy a celeron 520 or the celeron 530 socket M version. And if you did upgrade you can use any socket M cpu out there. My brother has a dv8000 it uses the same motherboard as a full featured v5000/dv5000 and hes running a t5500

so the 430198 mobo won't fit in my laptop? I checked the some pictures for the hp dv5000 full-featured laptop and it seems the right side looks the same as mine.

Edit, there's an extra usb port below the pcmciacard it seems, can i remove that thing?

okay i just updated bios to latest version, still no go, maybe i should get a Pentium Dual-Core instead cuz they run on 940GML? i think the performance boost would be worth it.
