Has anyone installed this new reference setting drive yet? I'd like to purchase one for my next new laptop. And at a dollar a GB its price is as evolutionary as its capacity.
The availability should usher in a new maximum for GB max for standard SSD as well. Too bad there are no mSATA III slots yet.

I recently picked up a laptop with an mSATA connector and I stumbled upon this mSATA SSD. This would be perfect for my storage needs right now but I'm always paranoid of the quality and endurance of any SandForce SF-2281 controller. I know I'm discriminating and it might not be fair but I'd much rather have this type of mSATA SSD produced by Samsung (using Samsung's MDX controller and NAND). Brand loyalty exists for a reason. I've had ZERO problems with my Samsung SSDs and would like to stay in the family. But since there's no other option at the moment, I'd be willing to give this a shot (so as long as the manufacturer stands by their product, warranty and support).
I would like to see some reviews before I buy though. -
I'm in the same boat, once I see more reviews, I'll make up my mind in getting one or not.

So are there any other similar capacity mSATA SSDs available or is this it?
I checked, didn't find anything. Guess not?

If you want this much capacity out of a mSATA, Mushkin is presently your only choice.

The previous Atlas models used Toshiba Toggle NAND.

The point also being that an image of the 480GB that appeared on tweaktown on December 5th showed the 480GB Atlas with Micron NAND leading to other speculation and rumors that the memory was going to be Asynchronous

Yeah; 2 main problems: daughter card needed (z-height may be too tall for some notebooks) and SF controller (which sucks (performance-wise) at higher than 240GB capacities).
With a higher performing (crosses fingers) M500 mSATA coming in a few weeks - this is definitely a pass. -

Did you by chance read post #10 with the link to the tweaktown review?
The Mushkin 480GB Atlas reviewed on December 5th by tweaktown is different than the 480GB Atlas shown on Amazon that is linked in post #1. -

1. I don't think the z-height would be a problem for my case. Still you bring up a good point.
2. The SF controller and the memory type is what's stopping me from pulling the trigger. I just don't want to regret it later especially considering the cost of this SSD. For $100 less I could buy the 2.5" 500 GB Samsung 840 (not Pro) for mass storage, and a 256 GB mSATA Crucial M4 SSD as my OS drive. This might end up being the route I take instead.
My first plan was to keep my 2.5" 256 GB Samsung 830 as my OS drive and use the 480 GB Atlas mSATA SSD for mass storage.
Of my two plans, which would you guys choose and why? It'll help me decide.
3. M500 mSATA SSD? From who? What's the capacity? Price? Better yet, what are the specs? Now we're talking!
I'll go Google it right now...
EDIT: I had no idea! Haha this changes everything! That M500 lineup looks very impressive. Looks like Micron might be my next choice for both mass storage and OS drive. I could already see it, the 2.5" 960 GB and the 480 GB mSATA SSDs all under one roof. My mouth is watering. Sorry guys but it looks like I'll be waiting for the M500 SSDs now.
Somehow I missed post number 10, sorry. What is so different from the Atlas reviewed by tweaktown and the one for sale at Amazon?

Yeah - we all want the fastest possible setup Now!, but if we're not staring at a dead storage device and 'need' to buy something/anything today - the Crucial M500's are set to tear it up on the storage sub-system front for notebooks.
As for 'specs' and benchmark 'scores' - who cares? If the M500's (480GB capacity and higher) perform better than the 256GB (and higher) M4's in real world use - this is what makes these worth waiting for.
I have postponed purchasing at least half a dozen SSD's since the announcement of the M500's (some mine...) - I hope they are as balanced as the M4's are - even if the prices are higher than what has been posted/suggested so far. -
Is that good or bad? I am looking for a good side mSATA to replace the 128GB on the XPS 12 when it arrive sometime next month.
-
Oh no no, it's fine alright
-
I noticed though their, Mushkin, support forums are not working. I emailed on 1/24/2013 their tech support, that usually posts to that site, it is not working and have not gotten a responce. I am not sure if this could be a concern, just wanted to post a heads up as it has been down at least one week.
-
LOL, The $500-$600 Lenvo S405 has an mSATA III slot, so does the HP Probook 6475b.
-
I have to agree that the thickness of the 480GB Mushkin mSATA is likely to be a problem for some ultrabooks.
The pictures at both Amazon, and page 3 of the tweaktown review, make that very clear.
I know nothing about timing of when the M500 units (both mSATA and 2.5" SSD) will show up. But I'll be very surprised if it is sooner than March 1, which is 5 weeks from now. -
Well nobody's perfect. But it will still be useful in a lot of notebooks that aren't ultra skinny.
That's not too bad; some product orders can take that long. If that was/is a correct estimate, I'd put in a pre-order. -
Me xps should be here in two weeks. If m500 comes that would be nice. I can return the

thessdreview has a review posted of the 480GB Muskin Atlas mSATA SSD.
As feared by many, cheap asynchronous NAND memory.
Micron 25nm 64GB MLC asynchronous NAND flash memory (MT29F512G08CUAAAC5) provides a total of 512GB RAW memory, however, 32GB remains proprietary to LSI SandForce over provisioning and firmware needs.

I bought one and I use it in my NP9370 as the C drive. In the past I have only used Intel SSDs and I got spoiled using the Intel SSD Toolbox software to make sure it was optimized. Does Mushkin put out a similar tool or is there a 3rd-party software that would work with it? If theres no software tool, how do I know if it is optimized, ie - TRIM running, etc?
