Hey guys! I live in Canada and I'm doubling the RAM on my notebook. The 4GB packs from OCZ and Mushkin are $89.99 here over-the-counter, and the Kingston 4GB pack is $148.99. This is from www.canadacomputers.com, DDR2-667MHz RAM by the way.
Are OCZ and Mushkin bad brands or something? I do care about quality of parts, but unless Mushkin is the worst brand ever (and a quick Google search tells me this is not the case, as they are actually quite overclockable and made from high-quality parts... but how honest is the Internet?) I don't want to spend 70 dollars more for the same parts.
Thanks very much!

nope, all are awesome brands. kingston is just priced mre because it is a more respected brand. much like how apple overprices for comps. or nike shoes. anyother shoe will do just fine but nikes are more expensive. so yeah all are fine. ocz is awesome.

Its just marketing, actually Kingston does not make very good memory cards, they sell their name, and actually use the same generic memory chips as every other brand does.
Kingston outsources and manufactures all of their memory cards in China.
OCZ makes their chips in USA/Taiwan,
G. Skill (Great Skill) makes their chips in China.
Keep in mind the memory will all be the same, since these manufacturers use the same Samsung, Hynix, Qimonda, SEC, memory chips.
If you want higher performance memory, Corsair and Crucial use the higher performance Micorn memory chips.
You will be fine with the OCZ or G.Skill. The Kingston is only more expensive since your buying a name.
P.S. Nike sucks, they use slave labor and charge ridiculous sums for poorly made shoes.
If you want high quality shoes, get Lowa, all of their shoes are handmade, in the Czech Republic, Italy or Germany. Oh, yeah they carry a 3 year warranty, so they are awesome.

OCZ is quite alright. Never heard of Mushkin brand

Mushkin is an excellent brand. I use Mushkin in my desktop, and it's quite inexpensive, and Mushkin usually receives good reviews. I would go for the OCZ or Mushkin.

There are now a few modules around which have the lower latency of CL=4 at 667MHz. The OCZ2M8004GK is a PC6400 part which is reported to be CL=4 at 667MHz. There was discussion about a CL=4 PC5300 module in this forum during the past week or so.
Getting PC6400 may be prodent if you are thinking of moving to a new notebook within the next year or so.

Here is the DRAM MFG I am aware of.
Samsung largest
Hynix 2nd largest
Qimonda AG (Aeneon) 3rd largest
Micron (Crucial)
Elipda Memory
SEC is Samsung. Hynix formerly Hyundai Electronics. Qimonda AG formerly Infineon Technologies changed 5/06. Micron took over the memory divisions of Texas Instruments 98 and Toshiba 01. Elipda Memory was formed in 1999 when Hitachi and NEC merged memory divisions, in 04 absorbed Mitsubishi memory division.
In 2002 the United States Department of Justice began a probe into international price fixing. All company's listed above have since pleaded guilty to price-fixing conspiracy. Micron was the only one not fined for cooperating with investigators.
That is your history of memory lesson for today.
So buy OCZ or Mushkin if the best price.

Between OCZ and Muskin I prefer Mushkin just because of the sales I was able to find and the great luck I have had. I had OCZ die on me (they replaced it for free via warrenty) but my Mushkin was cheaper, and overclocked higher and just all around was the best experience I have had with ram so far.
Both ram modules may have been exactly the same IC's so I just had luck on Mushkins side. Still tho I would go with what brand has the best deal at the time and maybe even research the specific model and see what ICs are in it. -
there was a thread about ram, all brands of ram are the same they all perform equally what your paying for is the brand name. Just be sure that after you purchase the ram run memtest to be sure your ram isnt faulty.

Hi folks,
Time for a "Dumb" question ... somewhere on newegg I read a post that someone was claiming when they used OCZ laptop memory 2x2GB ... they thought their laptop was running a little hotter. BTW, he was running Vista.
Q: Does that claim make any sense!?!? If so, is there anything to the RAM Brand used?
Thanks,
G!

A little hotter than what? 1X1GB SODIMM? I mean with out some more info comment would be well? Uninformed. Is there any fluctuations between SODIMM's? Sure some. Significant? Not with notebook RAM. I am not commenting if they were OC'ing but similar there also. This would have been great if you had just started a new thread. Don't dig up old threads, start new. If I were a MOD!

Hi powerpack,
Thanks for the input ... I was not sure if I should have started a new thread when ... like you said ... did not have the whole story ...
Your answer did help me though ... my concern was with Laptop RAM ...
Thanks again,
G!

Mushkin and OCZ are the BEST preformance memory you can get. The mushkin Redline in absolutly the best memory on the market and OCZ is a close second with they're platinum editions.
I have a 2gb (2x 1gb) pair of OCZ platinum ddr500 running at 2-2-2-7 at 300 mhz (ddr 600) at 1T in dual channel. with a 4/5 fsb/dram split i have my opteron 148 running at 2640 mhz (aka 440 mhz overclock)
I would recomend mushkin and ocz to anyone -
Just to remind you all this is the laptop section, so yeah.
Any memory with a lifetime warranty is fine, since all memory is made by one of the 5 major memory manufacturers anyways.
