What is the smallest system that my 2.5" 256gb Dell SSD will fit into? Do Netbooks use the same size HDs? I'm looking at like the 11" Acer Aspire One systems.
-
From what I have read the Acer Aspire One comes configured with either a SSD or a regular HDD. If you buy the HDD version, it will come in the 2.5'' variety so you should be able to swap them out. If you buy the SSD version, the SSD found is 1.8''. So you are better off buying the HDD version because the form factor for the drive matches the 2.5'' Dell SSD you already have.
Edit: If the specific model you are looking at is the Acer Aspire One 11.6'' 751h, then it does indeed use a 2.5'' SATA hard drive, so you will be able to swap your 2.5'' Dell SSD in it. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
The 256GB Dell SSD is a standard 2.5" SATA device. It'll fit in any machine that accepts a 2.5" SATA hard drive or solid state drive.

how much did the 256 cost you?
-
As much as the netbook
-
Ya it was like $480 but well worth it. Like lightning.

SSD's are awesome, I have a 128gb Corsair one and stuff loads instantly on it.
-
Yeah, whereas CPUs and other components have been evolving in increments, the SSD is a long overdue technology. I can't wait to buy one when the prices get in touch with reality. Right now a 256GB SSD costs around $830 here in Canada.

While in the US, Dell is selling the Samsung 256GB SSD for $480 (or less w/ coupons)...

Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
That's actually a really good price for a 256GB SSD...Earlier, before I found out that I wouldn't exactly need it, I was looking at an $230 Intel X-25 M for only 80GB.
Of course, everyone says that Intel is vastly superior, but think about the capacities!

While superior in several aspects, I wouldn't call Intels vastly superior to other consumer SSDs. There are many factors within the performance metrics itself and many outside performance such as power consumption (heat/noise), capacity, value, weight, shock resistance, etc. It depends also on personal usage patterns and budget to find the optimal product for each person.

I would love to have a SSD but I am not allowed to change out my hard disk.

I'm going to wait for a few more years for the 500gb SSDs to be $200. It should be around 3 years of wait
But then again, in 3 years there will probably be something much better than the SSD.
