Hi can you tell me which of these will get the best performance in vista doing normal things such as extracting 5gb winrar files, watching hd videos and burning dual layer dvds.

    Pc:
    Shuttle Sn25P

    4200 X2
    2Gb dual channel ram
    250GB 7200rpm Sata 2
    7900GT majorly overclocked (3d mark 06 is about 6000)

    Laptop:
    M1330

    Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB, 4MB Cache)
    3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
    250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
    128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

Also how much more powerful is the desktp cpu, and will the hard drive speed be noticble.

The hard drive speed will be noticeable.
Your laptop actually has a faster processor for most tasks.
Winrar has a built-in benchmark, if you open Winrar and press ALT+B

Your laptop will have a better perfomances in stuff you are going to do, particularly because of faster processor and more RAM memory. Weaker graphics has no effect in such a tasks.

True, but I'm pretty sure that 8400GS is strong enough to run HD without problems.

can anyone guestimate the difference in speed between using winrar on my laptop vs winrar on my pc (5400 vs 7200) . I have personally found that winrar doest require much cpu at all.

The laptop has a better cpu but a slower hard disk, so I'd expect the laptop to extract faster (maybe) but the desktop to burn faster? Hard to say really, should be pretty close.
