Hi, all. Today, my notebook's fan sounds noisier. Before, whenever it came on, it sounded what I guess a typical notebook fan sounds like, like a hair drier on a low-speed setting (but not as loud). Now, it sounds like a power tool (e.g., a circular saw) or the engine of a sports car. There doesn't seem to be a difference in the frequency of its turning on or the duration of its operation. Is it about to fail? Is this something I can replace myself? The notebook is an HP Pavilion dv1049cl that I bought 3 years and 10 months ago. I've been toying with the idea of getting a new one (and keeping this as a spare) but not soon (I'm waiting for Apple to announce the new MacBooks next month or for Black Friday).
Thanks in advance.

Which CPU has it got ? Pentium M ? Monitor temps using HWMonitor.
You can give Undervolting a try. -

Hi.
You fan vents most likely need cleaning out as they get full of dust and your laptop will overheat, this causes the system fans to kick into overdriver to cool the system down.
If you look into were the hot air comes out of you laptop with a flashlight and see if the vent is blocked with dust, if it is you can try a can of Air Duster to clean it out!!!
have a look at the thread below

The dv1049cl uses a pentium M processor, so you can try undervolting the cpu, with CPU Rightmark.
That may help, but the problem is most likely directly related to either dust buildup in the cooling system, causing the fan to rotate slower, and louder (cause the dust is preventing the air from moving)
or the fan is aging and/or their is a loose bearing.
You should try cleaning the cooling system before replacing the laptop. You can use compressed air cans, or you can take the system apart and clean it the right way, removing all of the dust. That will keep the temperatures much lower.
Here is the fan for your laptop, its not very cheap:

You can try using the model number and google it to find it elsewhere for hopefully less money

As previous answers stated, its most likely that the vents are clogged. Though, as computers age they do tend to run slightly hotter/louder. But Undervolting would probably help. You could also get a Notebook cooler, a quiet one... to lower your temps, so then your fans could slow down and decrease noise level.

Thanks, everyone. Weirdly, the "normal" sound of my fan returned, first intermittently, then for good.
