Hey all,
I got my new laptop yesterday and I was slightly disappointed. It is a phillips X57. Spec wise
1.6 IC2D
1 gig of memory
100Gb hard drive
15.2 inch display
Vista (OH GOD NOOOOOO!!!!)
Either way the reason I am here is I am wondering how I would go about changing the Graphics card in it. I really want something a bit better for games and I have no idea where to start with this. I am not sure if the graphics card is going to be on board or anything and I was wondering if you guys could help me.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Okay, if it is onboard graphics you have no chance. If it is dedicated propreitary graphics you have very little chance and if it is MXM graphics ( read up here) you have a slight chance. It is very slightly possible in some cases, but don't get your hopes up.
-
Ok how do I tell what type of graphics card it is without opening it up?
-
The phillips X57 has an NV go 7400(run 'dxdiag' in the run box and look in the display tab) making it very unlikely to upgrade unless philips offers an better GPU for that model.

I presume it is the previous version of this. If so, it has the Intel 950 GPU, which struggles with Vista's eye candy.
However, turn off the eye candy and Vista will run fine (and in my opinion, looks better). My way of turning off the eye candy is to right click on the My Computer icon and select properties which brings up the system window. Then select Advanced system setting, then click the settings button under Performance. Then select Adjust for best performance (but scroll down the list and select Smooth edges of screen fonts), and press apply. You will find everything runs much more smoothly.
More RAM would be the next recommendation for the computer. 1GB for Vista is the bare minimum.

More ram will definitly make the computer run smoother, it may have 2x512mb sodimms in there, so you will have to buy 2x1gb to replace that. If your lucky it has a single 1gb in there tho so you can just buy one more.
It wont cost you too much and definitly be worth it. Dont worry about 4gb of ram on that machine. -
Uh oh! The kids are begging for rep again. Earn it.

Got to use my voucher before 2/7/07 as it runs out, cant find any more laptops from pcworld/currys as restricted to these stores for around the £750 mark with dedicated graphics....crucial has a memory upgrade for 1G DDR for under £30 have u upped it to this and has it made a difference.... -
Hi,
Ok like he said what are you trying to run? 256 dedicated should be pretty decent for now.
One must tho is upgrade the RAM as vista ultimate is recommended with 2gb and as this only has one it is the bare minimum.
I think this only has 2 slots and only supports 2gb RAM so the best you can do is put in 2x 1gb.
Go here:
http://www.crucial.com/uk/
download the system scanner and it will tell you exactly what memory is preinstalled (if its 2 x 512 you'll have to get rid of them and buy 2x1gb but if your lucky it will be 1x 1gb in which case you only need one more) it will also tell you what type of memory you need to get and offer yo some products through their site.
Sometimes they are a complete rip off and sometimes they are hard to beat and the other best place I've found for buying memory is on ebay (dont buy used though)
I have ordered one of these to be delivered next Thursday, and the first thing I will do is upgrade it.
Also in reply to the guy who is buying 1 if they have any left try and get a recon one as my mate works for this chain and they are not 2nd hand as is commonly understood but are less than 28 days old and the most common reason they are sent back or refused delivery of is that the box is damaged or has been opened (usually in transit) the computers themselves 9/10 have never been touched by a customer and it is simply the cardboard box has a tear in.
(you'll also save £200)
and use this code june10g for £10 off -
Why were you disappointed, did you not choose the laptop or the specs yourself?
