The screen on my laptop just stopped working one day. I tried to connect a monitor to the laptop but there was no video display on that monitor either. I purchased a new laptop but would like to get files from the old one onto the new one. The old one is an HP dv 4000 running windows xp and the new one is a compaq presario cq50 running vista. Is there a way to get the information from one computer to the other?

You could purchase an external hard drive enclosure, pop your dv4000's HDD in the enclosure, connect to the new laptop and transfer your files. As a bonus, you also get additional storage on the external HDD.

Take out the HDD from the old notebook and put it in an enclosure or into a desktop computer or such.

First question would be if the display is totally dead or if the backlight on it went out. If it is just the backlight, you should still be able to see what is on the display if you hit it with another light source or sunlight.

If the laptop with the dead display has a VGA out connector, just connect it to a VGA monitor and toggle that display on.

If you have a completely dead display and no VGA out, then you'll have to remove the hard drive from that laptop and find a way to cable it to another laptop or desktop to copy the data from it. This isn't nearly as difficult as it sounds. Just remove the hatch from the bottom of the laptop, take out the hard drive, and then get the appropriate cables to connect it to another machine. If you can't don't have the right cables, any mom and pop computer store would have them although they are going to want to charge you a few $$ for the service of copying the data to another drive or CD/DVD.

maybe he had to switch manually with a keycombination to the external monitor?

but yes, if not, plug out the hdd and get an ide/sata usb adapter or external enclosure.
