If you have descrite graphics it could be that it is overheating. Use HWmonitor to check the temperature. It is a freeware.

If you have an intel integrated card, and your screen flickers then you're probably like me, you have a faulty display cable.

i doubt overheating will cause the screen to flicker... its more likely that u have a dieing LCD or ur display cable or some other cable connecting LCD to motherboard is loose.

Try opening it up and check the cable connections. If they are alright, then update your drivers. It's not unheard of for drivers to cause screen flickering.

Screen flickr might be a broken electrical component - we had that one a laptop, it was fixed under warranty and I think 2 years later it started again....

Don't ask me what it is though.

In that case, it might be that the cable is getting "overstrained" and just breaks?

I don't know because the replacement cable I'm using right now is not new either. I got it second hand from ebay.

Years ago on the old Thinkpad 760 series, we saw this a lot. If it only happened when plugged into the mains adapter, it was the DC/DC card.

I'm a decade out of date now, so this is likely quite irrelevant... :)

No point the laptop is out of warranty. Besides I will do a better repair job than the tech guy at Acer and for a fraction of the price :D.

I have an old Acer TravelMate 290. It had a faulty motherboard four years ago. I emailled Acer to see if they can sell me a replacement board. Their reply was: "Sorry we can't. Please send us your laptop and we will get our technician to repair it. This will cost you between £300 and £700". The funny thing is that at the time I could have bought another Acer TravelMate 290 from ebay for less than £300 .

I didn't reply to their message and repaired it myself for less than £100

Your not far off. I was reading yesterday that lot off people experienced the flickering with there laptops due to their faulty charging card. There is a 2007 or 2008 thread about this somewhere in the NBR forum.

in the OP case I think it is the display cable. I would suggest that he tries to put some tape between the motherboard socket and the display cable plug. Also to check that the display cable is well connected to the back of the screen.
if this doesn't help then he should replace the display cable altogether.

Occam's Razor? It could be just a simple faulty backlight or backlight inverter. It would make sense to me, since when he says he restarts it, the inverter has a second to cool off, before heating up to start flickering again. So is the backlight just blinking, or is the entire display going out when it blinks?

    I don't think it's the inverter

flickering = image goes up and down = problem arround display cable.

blinking = image light then dim = problem with inverter or again display cable.
