    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had my external speakers plugged into my laptop Asus z70va as I usually do. I unplugged them expecting to listen to the rest of the online video through the laptop speakers but no sound comes out.

I've checked all the things like whether Mute is on (it isn't) the volume is at the max - device manager doesn't show any problem.

I plug the external speakers back in and sound comes out.

I've turned the laptop off and on. The laptop speakers were working the other day. I don't understand. The only thing I can say is that the hole where I plug in the external speakers into has a red light on inside. I never noticed that before but I have no idea if that is unusual You have to look at the side of the laptop to notice it.

Can any one figure out what is going on?

Have you installed any updates lately? They frequently fix one thing and break another. Try reinstalling the drivers (they can be found on the manufacturer's website).

You have a physical problem, sorry. Likely it is the connection when you plug in the headphones? How does it know to go headphones or internal speakers? that is the problem. It is not software!

If mine I would physically try and jack the jack around hoping it might free up what is stuck.

Post back if you want more info. It is not a sound card or Mobo issue. The headphone is jamming the release to the speakers.

I thought it might be something like this. I have to jack the jack around just OR get it to play without static. I assumed it was the jack wire to the external speakers. But maybe all that jamming cause the release to get stuck.

I have tried to "jam" around the jack but it doesn't seem to do any good.

    So you got any suggestions?

The red light is a digital optical out signal. Normally you can have both this and the normal audio out, but you can check the settings in the Sound Manager.

I would plug / unplug the external speakers a few times in case the socket is like this

where pushing the plug in breaks the power to the internal speakers. The contact should spring back when the plug is removed.

I've tried but it won't unspring. Can you explain a little more about the digital optical out signal? Is that how the sound istransmitted to the external listening device?

Also what do I check in the settings in sound Manager? I looked but I did not know what I was looking for. It always opens as set for headsets -- even when I change it to laptop speakers. Is that normal or does that reflect that the release on the headset jack is stuck?

What I would do? Totally not recommended but I would do. In my life had much success. But you must be crafty. You plug in headphone? Tends to push things away? Breaks a connection? Tells speakers to not play. I would open up and start to bend things? Short of that? I would try and start to shove a paper clip in, and see if that makes work?

The digital out uses a special fibre optic cable such as to an external sound device. It will provide a better quality signal. Anyway, that's not our problem here.

It is difficult to diagnose the problem properly without being able to look carefully in the inside of your external speaker port. If it is a mechanical switch mechanism then it may be possible to make a little hook by straightening half a paper clip and then bending a small hook into the end (and keep the other half bent to act as a handle). Then go fishing inside the socked with the computer turned off (don't want to short out the electronics and make things worse).

I suspect that we won't be able to attack this port from the outside. The example in the photo is for a bigger size, but the small ones are usually built into a lump of plastic. However, it could be worth a try if the internal fishing fails.

    I've had a similar problem....
only in my case.... the both integrated and external speakers would play at the same time.
there are certain drivers that let you anable and disable different outputs, so might wanna check that out.

except for that, replacing the jack should do do it (basic soldiering)
