I decided to update my IDT audio drivers. Now when I plug in my mic it detects it, but the microphone simply doesn't function.
I'm 100% sure I didn't use another models drivers. It was for the 6860fx.

And I can't find the stock IDT drivers. Oh I tried the Gateway forums here with no response:

After installing an update from Gateway's support website P-6860fx:
I seem to have IDT installed but something else staying as an unknown device. I've tried uninstalling in Safe mode with no avail.
Here's a pic of my device manager:

and the IDT interface changed a little. not giving me any options if I click on the mic slot (where I just had to set it their to make microphone work):

It looks like your laptop's built-in modem (and the modem driver) has failed after installing the updated IDT Audio driver. Obtain the latest HD modem driver for your Gateway P-6860FX notebook computer here:
    http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=21900&dscr=Modem Driver&uid=207855426

Uninstall the "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" from Device Manager, delete its driver files, then install the modem drivers from the D20309-001-001.exe package to resolve the problem.

As for the Mic problem, it's a mystery to me. Not sure if the other IDT/Sigmatel Audio driver files from other Gateway laptops will make your microphone work.
