    Hi Friends!!! :)

Just now bought a Lenovo Y550 despite so many negative reviews!!
    The config are :

    Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6600 (2.20GHz),
    15.6" HD Wide LED
    4GB RAM(DDR3)
    320GB HDD
nVidia Geforce G 240M graphic card with 1GB memory

    The specs are good enough..

    I want to know

    1) Will I be able to play Crysis with this Config?
    2) What is the avg FPS for a game to be played comfortably, 30fps ?
    3) With 1366x768 screen resolution will there be any diff in gaming and Movies?
    4) What are the things to be done when i receive my laptop. I mean removing all bloatwares and all that stuff.
    5) Does a clean reinstall is suggested. If yes then wont it be a problem to install all the drivers (audio, video and webcam)?

I always read these forums because its knowledgable and contains lot of R&D by other users..

Apologies for a long list of question
    help will be appreaciated
    thanks in advance!!! :D

You should be able to play Crysis, but dont expect it to run it on high settings.
But you should get Windows 7 if you do not already have it preinstalled and also get the latest nvidia driver from the Nvidia homepage.

And why people hate 1366x768 screens is because you dont get much vertical space, but for gaming / multimedia it should be okay.

    1. Yes, maybe not at higher settings but keep the resolution low and you can easily sit at medium, and possibly a couple high settings.

    2. Yes, try for 30 FPS, some games can drop to 25 with little difference but thats real the end users perspective.

    3. Im not sure what you mean? In regards to fluidity or quality? That resolution is tailored for watching movies, meaning more real estate for the actual movie and less black bars. The 240m can handle all movies, and in tandem with your CPU, you can watch high-def just fine as well(720p anyways). '

    4. Just go to control panel, then add remove programs, and remove the programs which would appear as bloatware to you.

    5. Just make sure it comes with an install disk, then if it is running W7, it will install all the drivers automatically, so you just install and thats it.

Congrats on your purchase! Narsnail hit everything right on the head, listen to him! You can also post any questions in the Lenovo forum as well, other Y550 owners can help you out.

You might want to upgrade your CPU to something better like a T9000 series one or a P9000 series one... which are newer and will allow you memory to run at full speed... currently it can only run at 800MHz but with these new CPU's it will run at 1066 MHz..

    I found a test of a similar system (T6600, 4GB RAM, 1GB NVIDIA GT 240M)-

Crysis- Med settings- 33fps and Low settings- 50fps

I bet the ram doesent even support 1066 MHz, so if he upgraded his cpu he would also upgrade the ram modules.

    Hi Friends :)

At last I purchased the Lenovo Y550!!!
    The config is :

    Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6600 (2.20GHz 800MHz 2MBL2)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
nVidia Geforce GT 240M graphic card with 1GB memory
    4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz SODIMM Memory (4 Dimms)
    320GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm

Now I have some questions for you. I hope you all will take time to answer these :)

    1) What has to be done when i receive my notebook. I mean shall i remove all the bloatwared manually? Or a clean reinstall of the OS? But in case of reinstall i would need the drivers cd i.e audio, video and webcam? So is there anyway out?
What you did when u received uor brand new Notebook.

    2) Will I be able to play Crysis on this ? I saw that GT240 gives a fps of ~30 while playin Crysis. I am not very good in fps. can u pls tell me what is the playable average fps a game must have. is it 30?

    3) As we all know the screen resolution of this Notebook is very low i.e
1366*768. Is that of much importance? Is there anything i wont be able to do with this screen resolution.

Thanks a lot!! in advance. the only reason for posting these questions in theses forums is that experts from all over the world visit these and I hope they will have an answer to these.... thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about just enjoying for a bit before doing anything. I don't know about the IdeaPads, but on ThinkPads all the drivers and apps are store in a folder called SWTools on the C:\ drive. I don't know if it's the same with IdeaPads, but it wouldn't surprise me.

To do a clean install, you'll need a Windows disc. The recovery discs are not a Windows disc, nor will Lenovo provide you with one. You're on your own here.

Not much of a gamer, but I would expect Crysis to play fine on the 240. I'll differ to someone else if they want to chime in.

I'm afraid you're stuck with the resolution, but the higher the resolution, the harder your card has to work, so it may be a good thing.

You could do a clean install if you want, or even set up a dual boot or virtual machine. That's what I did because I didn't want to lose all the Toshiba utilities and drivers, yet I didn't want my clean OS to become bogged down with the utilities and drivers.

GT240M should be pretty good for Crysis. It's better than my 3650, and I play on the following settings with my 3650:

    Textures - Very High
    Object Quality - Very High
    Shadow Quality - Low
    Shader Quality - Medium
    Physics Quality - Very High
    Game Effects - Low
    Volumetric Effects - Low
    Photoprocessing - Very High
    Water Quality - Very High
    Sound Quality - Very High
Motion Blur (Only available with patch 1.1 and later) - Very High

    Resolution - 1280 x 800 (Native)

    Anti-Aliasing - 0xAA

Generally 30FPS most of the time, heavy action 20 -25FPS. To give you an idea, I generally get 30FPS in "Onslaught".

The GT 240M should be much better than that.

*Note: 1366 x 768 and 1280 x 800 are pretty much the same in terms of resource usage.

As for your last question or statement, you could always get an external monitor.
