I'm the owner of a Sony SZ-250, and the external HD in question is Seagate's Freeagent Desktop.

For some reason, my notebook won't recognize the external HD.
A "Found New Hardware" message displays which prompts me to install drivers.

I've looked under Device Manager and Computer Management to no avail.

Would anyone be so kind as to help me with my problem?

Did your external HD come with a drivers cd?

What connection protocol are you using?? Firewire, USB2.0?? Thats important. USB is almost always plug and play, but the more advanced types might require you to add drivers or possible even enable functions in your bios.
