my speakers studder a lot, at first i thought i might have blown a speaker, so i hooked up a pair of external speakers and it does the same thing. then i tried headphones and it still does the same thing, maybe i ruined my sound card, i used my speakers alot. most of the time they would be at full blast for like 2 or 3 hours at a time. then one day they just started studering. i have no idea what to do. any help would be greatly apperciated.

Try reinstalling the sound card driver.
-
i did that and they are still doing the same thing.
-
Do you still get system beeps during start up?

There is a real good chance you fried your little IC amp, not made for this kind of use. If you have a PC slot get the soundblaster card, way cheaper than motherboard repair. -
i have all my sounds. system sounds, game sounds, music from my hard drive, they just studder and drag. i will look into the sound blaster card. thanks for the advice

i was looking into the Audigy 2 zs for about $100. i was just wandering what you guys and gals might suggest?
-
Before you shell out $100, why not do a driver reinstall on your sound card? And even then, it might be worth it to check out your hardware connections...could be your card is not properly connected to the PCI slot.
-
i did do a driver reinstall and it did not work. how would i check to see if the card is connected properly. i have never taken a laptop a part. and if the card used to work why would it all of a sudden stop working. i have been extra careful to make sure that it does not get bumped around.

2 Jekyll & Hyde:
one last thing you could try to rule out software is to run a different [instance] of the operating system. There are many ways to do it, but what I would do is install another copy of XP onto a partition that doesn't have Windows already on it. Then install the drivers and see if the sound works. This will ensure that the problem is not Windows/driver related. That would take about an hour and then the clean-up is fairly easy.
as to the external sound cards Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA or Audigy 2 NX USB2 will give you a real nice quality sound. You won't be able to use laptop speakers with them though. Regarding the price, I've seen Audigy 2 NX for around $60 on eBay and Audigy 2 ZS for around the same price. -

The sound card in laptops is integrated into the motherboard so you cannot re-connect it.
Keep in mind that the Audigy 2 ZS is a PCMCIA card and will not work in laptops that only have an ExpressCard slot. -

that sounds like a great idea, only one problem. i don't have a copy of XP. everything was preloaded on our computers, so we don't have a copy of XP. and we don't really want to buy one when we really don't need it.
i will start looking into usb sound cards. i am pretty sure i only have an express card slot. it says express card/34 so i really don't know what that means. -
It means your SOL for now, there are about 7 cards made for this slot but no sound cards.
This only leaves you with USB or firewire sound out options.
You need to try what LESHII suggested, do you not have a restore disk as well? If you’re under warrantee you might make some calls. -
i think i will try getting a usb sound card. i don't miss my speakers that much. so it will probably be a while before i get one. there are a few other things on my wish list that i want to get first. thanks to everyone for the help.
My speakers are not working
