I was opening up my Acer Aspire 9300 with the intention of removing the two 512MB RAM cards and replacing them with with two 1GB cards. In the process I opened another panel and found what appears to be a lone RAM slot, empty. What would this mystery slot be for?

Did you find the two main memory slots ?
Under which panel did you find the vacant slot ? -
if the mystery slot matches what a memory card looks like, than that means that the 512mb of memory your system has, is on a single 512mb slot somewhere else on the laptop, or it has 512mb of memory built on the motherboard.

Upside down with the battery on the top.
The compartment closest to the battery is the mini pci card bay. The one at the lower right is the pci express mini card bay. The compartment to the right of that one is the memory bay. -
