I've noticed that G speeds (usually 1.7-2.5MB/s) are infuriatingly slow for anything more than a few hundred megabytes. Is it possible to upgrade the wifi card to N and attain ~10MB/s? And what would be a suitable card? Also I've heard that there is a difference between having two antennas versus having three.

Are you talking about transfer rate between two computers?

I bought an Intel 5300 on ebay for my Inspiron 1545. I did my research and got one that isn't an ES. It works well.
I also bought an extra antenna on Ebay, but I couldn't tell any difference before and after installation of the third antenna, not that I have any routers to connect to with more than two data streams. -
Yes, between a wired desktop and wireless notebooks. When it comes to internet speed, g is a slight bottleneck on the cable connection (~2MB/s or 16.5Mb/s).
What's "ES"? -
I had the same issue like you before. I ended up getting an intel 5300 card and upgraded my router to dlink dir 655 and my speed now is averaging about 9-11 Mb/s between both my desktop (XP) and my notebook (Win 7) The best I did was about 12 Mb/s on a 4.3gb folder from my desktop to my notebook. ES stands for engineering sample. I would avoid getting a ES card. You should look for the new card from intel I believe its Intel 6200

Engineering sample... meaning its one of the first of the products which intel tests before mass producing it... it lacks some features.... Also ppl who are given it sell it on ebay and don't return it to intel after testing it... This is illegal so ur better off staying away from ES parts.
