Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card to get better resolution than 1024*768 on a HP compaq nc6000?

It is not the GPU that you need to upgrade (which you cannot, BTW). You need a higher resolution LCD screen (which I don't think is available for that PC).

    I'd suggest an external monitor.

OK, thanks. I have an external monitor in the office, but I'm a bit annoyed with the resolution when out travelling. Guess I'll start looking for a new laptop instead.
